Interesting article.

I think it will continue to push the F150 above the rest of the market

I saw this on another car site too. I know they had a diesel option ready to go and axed it. I wonder what is different this time?

Wonder if it's the smaller version of the 6.7 they had been working on, or the inline 5 they are putting in the new Transit vans?

I just checked out a friend's new Ram Ecodiesel last night. Said he gets 29mpg freeway with camper full of stuff and family on board. It seemed a nice truck.

That exhaust on that truck in the video looked weird though.

I doubt he gets gets 29 empty, let alone loaded, let alone towing anything, let alone towing a camper

I'd put my money on the I5, because it's already US-certified.

Given Fiat/Dodge is stealing a slice of the market by having a diesel 1/2 ton. And the stringent CAFE standards coming into effect very soon. It seems very likely.

I've read quite a few tests online and spoken with people who own the engine in other vehicles. I believe it. The magazines have said 27-29 highway was observed in their driving.

My buddy has the ecodiesel in an extended cab 4x4 configuration. Gets 29 regularly when empty. But he says they are gutless. He hates having to tow with it.

He's not getting 29 towing or loaded up. Also didnt they have to only have 2 people in the truck when they did the Ike challenge due to payload restrictions?

No, not towing. Just has a camper shell, couple kids, and some toys in the camper nice weather, grampa pace.

Either way, it's like 10 MPG over what I get with my 5.0 in the same freeway conditions

Sorry too alarm to many BS alarms with my last post

Rumor has it that Tata is paying Ford to do the Federal Emissions certification on it since they have a lot more experience doing these. As a result they are getting it for next to nothing. That engine is rated at 244Hp 440Tq in Euro trim. Ours might be close to that.

The real deal breaker is the option price. The Ram diesel is expensive and the payback period on it is longer than most people keep a truck. Buying one means you're banking on higher resale value or willing to take a bath. That's not a risk I would take on a Mopar. The diesel Liberty tanked in resale because they failed to support it. The EcoDiesel isn't off to a trouble free start either and it's sitting around a 12% sales rate. If Ford can offer it for substantially less and not have problems they will do ok with it.

Me personally, I'll pass for now. A turbo gas motor has equal or greater power, significant less purchase price, much less complicated emissions and less maintenance. I'll buy a little bit more gas and call it good.
