I know people get pissed behind me but if there's a dump truck in front of me I slow way down to create distance. I won't go anywhere near those things!

 

Yeah they raise everyones rates. Not that I am harping, just saying I dont like Bernie Sanders.

 

I don't like any of the candidates....especially Hillary and the Cuban tag team of Cruz and Rubio.

 

I came across this article, and figured I would share. I had no idea the glass was specifically engineered to reduced road noise. Perhaps in doing so they are less effective against impact.
Im hopeful there will be aftermarket units available in the near future.

The problem is probably higher stress from the shape of the windshield. Puts more tension on the glass, making it more likely to be damaged from impact.

 

I had a Toyota Tacoma. I took it to a dealer to do a TSB windshield reseal. They called a guy with a van who does "Fix your windshield real quick out in the parking lot" sort of work. It was a complete jacked up mess from hell. Rubber tar everywhere, tarred over the VIN, rubber trim put on wrong, and a dent in the hood.

 

I have always had the SoundScreen glass - I learned of this option when I ordered my first replacement. I'm not an engineer, but is it the shape of the windshield or whatever they're doing to make it a SoundScreen?

The day I drove the latest windshield home from the repair place, a car picked up a tiny piece of gravel, less than 1/4 of my little fingernail and it pitted the windshield. A single pit, that was smaller than I could detect visually is what developed into a full crack when it was cold.

I'm documenting my experience and yours in this thread. One more replacement and I'm going thermo.

 

Doesn't anyone contact their insurance company to do a windshield repair? If you have glass coverage, they will have a pit, chip, knick, etc repaired, for free. Having lived on the Canadian border in Minnesota, Alaska and the mountains of Arizona, I've always had the pits replaced and only once had a windshield replaced. (Baseball size rock blasted a windshield on the interstate). The idea is if done correctly, an epoxy is inserted into the crack and water doesn't get in and expand when cold/freezes.

The repair has always been free and it has never caused an increase in my insurance rates. One agent told me companies prefer to make repairs since windshield replacement costs helps drive up costs.

 

The crack can only be like 8 inches though for a repair?

 

I tried the windshield repair. I want my $60 back.


The guy said you have to do it fast or dirt gets in there.

I dont know about that. I had a star'd rock chip fixed in another truck once.

Definitely didnt work on this truck though.

 

When I've had chips, I try to put clear packing tape over it as soon as possible. Keeps water and dirt out until they can repair it. I've never had an issue with a repair done soon after it occurred.

As for having to pay, the insurance company paid the freight, nothing out of pocket for me,
