From my previous '07 Harley F150 to '15 Lariat - decreased a whole 96 cents. Joy! - Og

 

I'm looking to replace my peg legged 2011 for either a 4x4 or a locker 4X2 Lariat because I'm trying to move north. It just so happens there is one of each at my dealership, so I received an online quote for each. The 4X2 is $6.~ more per month. The 4X4 is $.80 less per month to insure. I looked at total cost, both are within $100, the 4X4 is rated better on gas, the insurance is cheaper by almost $7 per month. It looks like I'll be hitting up the 4X4 route at the end of the month even though I only really need the 4X2.

 

Depending on how far North you are moving, you will definitely want the 4x4. I'm in MO and wouldn't have anything less than 4x4. 4x2 trucks suck in the snow unless you put weight in the bed and/or snow tires. Not to mention, 4x2 doesn't hold resale value near as well here since nobody wants a 4x2.

 

Back in the day I used to drive a peg leg Ranger in northern Michigan and didn't have any problems. I'm not going that far north this time.

 

I think you have that backwards. All things equal, the 4x4 will be WORSE on gas, more expensive to insure, and of course, its a $5-$6,000 option to begin with

I spent the winter of 2010 (the last el-nino year) in the mountains of West Virginia with my 2005 4x2 one wheel peel, and there was snow on the ground the entire time, and I did alright. I ran off the road into a ditch once. 4x4 would not have prevented that, although it may have gotten me OUT of it. As it was, someone behind me saw me, had a chain and pulled me right out

 

All I can tell you is I did an insurance quote with the VINs and the quote came back cheaper on the FX4. The better gas mileage probably is a function of the smaller ecoboost engine in the FX4. The 4X2 had more options than the FX4, which also probably played into the more expensive insurance and almost identical price.
