Limp Mode / Speed Sensor

I have a 2011 F150 with the 5.0 Earlier this week I experienced a brief moment when taking off from a red light, I did not have any warning lights. The truck was very sluggish when taking off for about 15 seconds and then it shifted gears and worked correctly. Then this morning while pulling up to another red light the maintenance light (Wrench) came on and the speed dropped to 0 and both the MPG indication went to --, the transmission also indicated that it was in 5th gear. I tried to manually shifting it to 2nd gear, but it remained in 5th. I was able to continue with my turn and decided to go home a get the wife's car. While I was driving the light cleared for a second or two and the transmission shift to 4th gear, this happened again one other time and it shifted to 3rd gear. Once I got home a parked the truck, then put it in reverse and backed up with no problem, put it drive and it went to 3rd gear. Put the truck in park again and shut it off. Restarted the truck and everything appears that it started working again.

I think it maybe a speed sensor going bad, however I will be taking it to get the codes read later. I there a way to pull codes by turning the ignition on and off?

Not on a Ford, you need an OBD2 scanner.
