my a/c started squealing on my '10 FX4 a while ago when engaging. I figured the compressor was seizing causing the belt to slip. Finally decided to take a look and it was the a/c clutch that was falling apart. The noise was coming from the rubber that bonds the 2 halves of the clutch.

replacing it would have been simple, but the bolt that holds in the clutch broke, so i had to drill and extract it .. but now my a/c works again!

I would say that it is SHOT.
Was the AC still working with it like that?
How many miles was on the old one?

 

nah, it wasn't working and it was *really* loud when engaged. It had under 100k kms (60k mi).

i reused the old a/c pulley, the bearing was still very tight, just resurfaced it on a lathe to clean it up. The original washer was too thick, so found a thinner washer in my junk drawer that brought the clearance into spec.

 

I stumbled on this old thread last week, I had the exact same problem as the OP, ordered the part from Rockauto, re&re'd the hub, now my AC is back!
As the rubber in the hub was completely spun out, there was nothing left to grip, but I got lucky with my little cordless impact wrench to get the bolt out from the end of the compressor shaft. To tighten it back up, I used a rubber strap wrench around the outer part of the hub. I ended up with .045 air gap after all was said and done, about .010 less then the recommended, but I didn't have any suitable spacers so I'll just keep an eye on it & hope it works for another 80,000 kms

 

AutoZone - Santech MT0986 for 2 bucks will get you a clutch install kit including a selection of shims.
