Looking at a 2011 ecoboost 4x4 for my daughter's first truck. Hadn't been looking for anything quite that new, but this one popped up and the price is only a little more than I wanted to spend. However....
The mileage on it is 193,000. Truck looks really, really clean in the pictures though I haven't inspected it in person yet. With that many miles, I'd think they would have to be mostly all highway, and it shows to be a Texas vehicle (though it could have driven anywhere).
Am I getting nervous over nothing or should I walk away regardless of how it looks?
I don't think I'd spend that much money on any vehicle with that many miles on it, regardless of what it is. 16k will get you a very nice older vehicle with less than 100k on it.

I agree with GLC.
Also, IMO, that's a LOT of truck for a first vehicle.

This! The EB has a lot of torque down low and can get sideways with very little effort. The traction control will stop the fun most of the time but if it gets turned off things could get ugly fast!
Now, who is it always saying an EB will fall apart before 100k? Here's one with twice that on it, Crazy...
That's a lot of miles for any pickup, whether Eco boost or 5.0. 16 is to much money for that many miles in my opinion. I sold a 2010 with a 5.4 2.5 years ago to a friend for 18,500 and it had 106k on it. So I think I would look elsewhere
Thanks guys, that was what I was kind of thinking too. Nice truck (nicer than I had planned for).
As far as a whole lot of truck for a 1st truck, I had originally purchased a 2010 FX4 for her. I got to adding stuff on it in the mean time and.....well.....I'm looking for another truck for her. LOL

Sure, that should be expected that a truck outlasts that mileage figure, but I saw a similar question posted at F150Forum as well and what I see there is that Ford expects an Eco to give 150k from the turbos reliably and anything after that is a crapshoot. Someone will probably compare Eco turbos to a big rig, but that's laughable. I've been around and replaced turbos on marine Cummins K19s that operate right at 2100 RPMs that break way less of a sweat than an Eco does.
I wouldn't take that on. An NA 3.7, sure. A 5.0? Sure. Less to fuss with.
My '08 is worth $16.5k on a lot per Edmunds with 81k miles.

There's a huge difference between durability testing and product life expectancy. The EB was tested to 150,000 for product durability not life expectancy. The rest of the engines are only tested to 100,000 miles. So yes, the EB is tested half again longer than any of the other engines. I've seen BW K03 turbos with 300,00k on them. And don't kid yourself, we have compared the parts count on the EB to 5.0 and they are both very complicated engines.
That's way too much money for any truck with almost 200K. It's your money and your kid so if you can afford it, more power to you. I bought my kid a brand new focus when she got her temps back in May 13. Remember, she only turns 16 once.
All my stuff has over 130K on it and I am proud of the cleanliness and mechanical reliability of all, but I get to be a bit of a stickler about things- as I am sure most are. I hear something, I'm inside or underneath looking for it.
That said, it's hard to know what kind of person put those miles on. Was it someone like me who is all over anything he perceives to be wearing out, or is he like most people who just ride everything out until it can't be rode out any longer. How many people REALLY pay attention to ball joints and fluids and various rattles and such? For most, if they can't see it, it's out of mind.
When I am looking at vehicles, I wear my get dirty clothes and crawl underneath and wiggle stuff and smell fluids- then I ask a bunch of questions. Puts me in a good position to negotiate too. I know many here would or actually do the same. If you buy my 160K ride, you will be fine. Someone else's...crapshoot.
And I'm just a shadetree (or driveway) mechanic at best. I just want my stuff always ready for anything.
Good luck on the search! Helping my 20 year old locate a good Wrangler right now...he likes his Jeeps...
I'm going to be a rare person to say go for it. Negotiate down on the price, inspect the vehicle, but don't be scared of 200k. If anything, all of the kinks for that year should have long been addressed on that truck.
My daughter's Grand Marquis is rolling 200k this week. She plans on driving it another 200k, she isn't scared of the maintenance.
I'll run my Ecoboost 250k+ without blinking an eye, and I've seen plenty of 300k+ EB's showing up this summer. You do the maintenance, you keep it going, and she has a 5 year young truck.
I'm a fan of the EcoBoost in theory, but I drive a 5.0 in practice. That argument has been hashed and rehashed, and I have no desire to hash it more. I'm just telling you what my opinion is.
Those who say that both the 5.0 and the EcoBoost are complicated are right. But there's one fact that shouldn't be overlooked: Ford has been building overhead cam V8s for 24 years. The 5.0 stands on the shoulders of those millions of 4.6 and 5.4 engines. By most accounts it's superior to both. The Boost has only been around 4 years. For those reasons, I would buy the truck in a heartbeat if it was a 5.0 in good shape, but I would think long and hard about the Boost.
