Transmission failure & LSD/Mud Tires

I've got an 09 SCREW 4x4 with 4.6 in it. 120K. Last year at approx. 25K ago I had 4.56 gears with a gear driven LSD installed (Auburn?) and 295/70R18 Nitto Trail Grapplers done at the same time. There is a level kit only.

I noticed the TCS would come on going around just about every onramp but didn't think much of it as it was a minor inconvenience it seemed. I did not use a programmer to fix speedo/odometer, again with the gears the truck drove fine.

About 3-4 months ago I noticed a whining noise which through more visits and unnecessary replacement of other parts than I would think were necessary they narrowed it down tot he transmission pump. First thought was the pump was OK just making noise, transmission started slipping pretty noticeably in the morning and they found metal shavings in the tranny. End result is I'm putting a reman tranny in at the dealer this week.

Finally my question: Do you think its coincidental that the tranny is going out 25 K after the gears/LSD/tire install? Could the TCS coming on be causing the tranny to fail? and most importantly what should I do to protect the new tranny?

Looks like truck has a tranny cooler already, the first owner put 56K and honestly it looked like a very rough 56K from the condition. I'm really easy on the thing but looking to keep this for my son and to tow a small travel trailer to bike races.

Howdy.

This is a 4.6 2V with a 4R75E behind it, or a 4.6 3V with a 6R80?

Mostly likely that first 56K purty much determined the lifespan of the trans. Any maintenance history - like trans fluid changes?

FWIW - you really did need to correct speedo/odo/shift points as that accuracy is crucial to the operation of other systems - TCS may be one of them.

Good luck

It's the 4.6 3V and 6R80. Fluid was change when I bought the truck and recently when they added a synthetic & some additive to try to quite the pump noise?

They What?!? Who's 'they'?

The trans requires NO additives, nor should ANY be added - ever. NOT recommended. The Mercon LV fluid is already a synthetic.

You really should have mentioned this from the get-go. Leaving out critical information does not help someone trying to diagnose, okay?

This could be the cause right there. How long have you had this 'pump noise'? The pump should have been changed rather than trying a 'wrench in a can' BS remedy. No such thing. Especially for a 6R80.

'They' are the dealer. The noise was present prior to the last fluid/filter/additive change, and done after 'they' replaced the ps pump and the idler pulleys that 'they' thought were the cause of the noise. I really don't know more because 'they' didn't write anything up on the fluid/filter/additive because 'they' are trying to make it right. In the end I'm getting a credit for what I've spent on the other work towards the tranny replacement. They said that since they found metal in the transmission after the fluid change, within one week, that the cost of replacing the pump and the torque coverter was close enough to the total replacemebt cost that it would make sense to just replace the whole thing. At 120k I really don't want them to take this apart and fix some of it so I'm fine with the replacement because I want to keep the truck a long time. I just want to make sure that the mods aren't the cause of the failure and I'm gonna end up in the same boat in a year. I'm taking your advice and going to get a programmer. Do you think that will be enough to protect the new transmission? Thank you for your time, my mechanical skills are limited to bicycles
