Too much oil?

I just took my eco boost 150 to the dealer to get my second oil change. They put in seven quarts of oil when my manual says six, they put in six last time. When I asked the service manager he said you have to add one quart for the filter. I think he is trying to make it look like they did nothing wrong. after I got home, about fifty miles, I checked the oil, it was an inch and a half over the full hole on the dipstick. They may have put more than one quart too much oil in it, I intend on taking it back to have them suck the extra oil out. Do you think it hurt my engine driving with all that oil in it?
Thanks.

As long as the crank shaft isn't whipping the oil into a froth, it shouldn't hurt it.

If the crank shaft is turning the oil to foam it's the same as not having enough oil pressure. The oil pump can't pump foam or air so you loose oil pressure.

The six qts should include the amount needed to fill the filter, the service manager is an idiot, IMHO.

I'd drain it out now. Just drain a little out of the pan until your dipstick is down to full. Most dealers are really stupid about the vehicles they sell. I just fill the filter before I spin it on. It certainly doesn't take an extra quart.

Too much oil can cause many problems and end up in a blown motor. Keep good documentation and take it back to be fixed. Don't do it yourself or you run the risk of the dealership denying any claim arising from this. Maybe even call ford motor comapny to lodge a complaint. Especially if the issue doesnt get immediately resolved. Whatever you do, don't wait to fix the problem.

Good catch.

I rarely have anyone else change my oil. But if I do, I always check the dipstick at the garage before I start it. I also verify the correct oil was used when picking it up.

When I was driving big truck, it happened a couple times. The old oil was never drained and 10 gallons were added.......

they were probably confused by which engine you have... the old 5.4L V8s took 7 quarts.

make them fix it, document what happened, and then NEVER GO BACK!

bottlemanpt,

I'm happy to document this dealer feedback for you so it can be reviewed by the customer relationship manager at the dealership. Please PM me your name, phone number, VIN, mileage, and dealer info, and I'll do so.

Ashley

Hi bottlemanpt,

Like glc said, if you click on my name, it'll let you send a PM. It is pretty much like an e-mail sent through the forum.

1 qt. overfull won't cause any problems, but sounds like you have more than an extra qt. Drain some out. I drove mine oil change to oil change (approx. 8,000 miles) with an extra quart in it and had zero issues. I am still not sure why I decided it needed 7 qts.
