Angry cold start issues

i have a 2010 f150 lariat 5.4l with 65k. recently our temps have drop down to 10 to -10 in pa. the truck started acting up once the weather dropped. went out to start it one morning it just cranked and sputtered to the point i had fuel out the tail pipe. so i did the whole foot on the floor clean out mode and it fired up. blew alot of pure white smoke then smoothed out. i purchased 8 new injectors i have yet to install because this morning was like 40 got in the truck it fired right up. im trying to decide where to start and if i should install injectors or what. it mostly happens if the truck sits for 8 or more hours in the cold. i thought it was leaky injectors but when it fired up fine this morning im not to sure now any help would be great

With 65k I think I'd change the spark plugs before I'd change the injectors.

Before just throwing parts ($$$) at it, I would get the codes read. Even though your check engine light may not be on, codes will be stored in the computer when certain things don't work right. It may just be a sensor or something simple like that.

if there is no code, let us know the following:
do you always fill up at the same place?
do all octane levels contain ethanol?
how much has it done this, more after a fill up?

when I had my 09 with the 5.4 I filled up at a Shell on my way home from a long trip. then happened to be about 7 days later on I filled up at the same place. with about a 1/4 tank left each time.
the first time after filling up, truck would almost start, sputter, and then die. second time I filled up there. same thing.

dealership tech ( and part owner of the shop ) said they have heard of some stations now and then having more ethanol in the fuel, or a pocket of it concentrated enough the computer cant adjust that quickly.

kind of believed him, then about a week later I heard someone talking about the same thing happening to them, same station. found out it happened a lot to people who were always filling up there for about a month.

are you on the original battery? Could be an issue with low voltage

My wife's 2010 escape battery just died 2 weeks ago.

I have a similar truck 2010 FX4 with 70k miles. We have seen down to -15 this year. It has started every time and runs perfect. I did replace the battery in December with an Autozone AGM Platinum series. I also changed the plugs to NGK Iridium at 40k miles just because. From my years of wrenching on cars I would not expect it to be an injector issue. Injectors seem to last forever. Like the engineers say you need data. It would be helpful to record a cold start and check voltage, temp sensors and airflow MAF readings. If the PCM is seeing a false temp (coolant, air) it will be running poorly, if it isn't reading the correct flow of air passing through the MAF it won't be running correctly either. Are you running a K&N or filter that may have fouled the MAF with oil?

Your particular issue sounds like a lack of spark.
