Did a little bit of towing today with the Ecobeast

So i made another run to San Antonio threw the Texas Hill Country today and found out how well this engine did while towing. Went to pick up a ATV, going to San Antonio i had a real good tail wind and cruising at 85 down interstate 10 with my 5x10 trailer and didnt even know it was behind me. Got there and filled up and got a impressive 17.8 mpg's

So coming back i had a Full Size 1200lb ATV on the trailer, with a 300lb toolbox, Heavy duty Rampgate on the trailer with a 30 mph headwind the whole way back.. I set the cruise back on 80 to 85 and was very impressed at the torque when pulling up 7 to 9 percent grades.. There was probaly 30 cars and trucks that would hit the hills and lose 10 or 15mph, the truck only down shifted 2 times into 5th while climbing the 9 percent grade and never dropped down on the speed, i basically just left everyone when climbing the hills. When i pulled up to the house the computer was reading 14.2 mpg..

I know i didnt have a "heavy" load but with the crazy head wind all 250 miles cruising at the speeds i was with the trailer i thought the truck did a really good job.

The truck Rolled over 8,000 miles today.. Bought it April 22nd of this year , Can yal tell i like to drive it?

I think if I went 85 in my truck without a trailer I wouldn't even get half that mileage. Sounds like a nice Saturday.

Now, you need to look at the sidewalls on your trailer tires and read the maximum rated speed..........

Trailer tires will probably read 50mph max. Never saw anyone on the highway heed that warning.

The Trailer had ST rated tires on it and it was rated at 65mph.. I always go to P series tires or LT tires. Seem to last alot longer

awesome. I get 13.8 mpg on 50/50 (hwy/city) empty driving. I'd surely see 7mpg doing your trip.

If I set my cruise at 85mph, with no trailer, I'd probably get 14mpg.

Some good numbers towing with the EB there!

Not if you got rid of that crappy California gas first!

Those P rated tires won't last long with a heavy load, there is a reason most boat and RV tires are rated for 65mph. Gotta love TX tail winds, I've got 4100 miles on mine and I took delivery last week of June. Will be picking up our new fifth wheel Friday this week and likely go camping to Fort Davis with it this weekend.

I did go on vacation to Colorado pulling my 3800lb boat, got 13.2mpg going up there @ 60mph, and on the way back I got 10.5mpg with some crosswinds and did 65mph on the way back.

85mph w/ a trailer? I am not sure if my truck has even seen 85. That's ballsy my friend.

Great MPG numbers though! And we know you like driving it!

With that small of a trailer and light of a load, those tires should be fine.

Hey, I forgot to tell my little 5.0 that it can't tow. Pulled a 6x12 Uhaul full of furniture, truck cab and bed was loaded from Athens to Burleson, 127 miles. Set the cruise on 65. It did shift out of overdrive a few times on the bigger hills but got 14.2 as well. Considering it can't tow, I was happy.

I dont consider a 5x10 single axle trailer with a toolbox and an atv to be a heavy load.. The trailer has a 3500lb axle with the 15inch tires.. Its not one of these flimsy lowes or home depot trailer with the 13 inch wheels. If i was towing heavy id go with a lt tire but for this trailer i think thats overkill.

I did keep a eye on the trailer and checked the tire temps going down there, the trailer did perfect, no swaying or anything like that.. Trailer did better with the load on it coming back, checked tire temps and again no swaying..

This is Texas after all where the 75 and 80mph speed limits are common, theres even 1 road around austin that has a 85 speed limit.. One of those things if your doing 60 or 65 and have cars coming at you at 85 and 90 that can get pretty dangerous also.. There was several pickups pulling trailers at the speed i was, but i left em when climbing the hills.
