Unhappy Poor Poor MPG 2012 EB

My MPG's are steadily getting worse here in San Diego. I am now down to 13.6 mpg driving about 300 miles per week 75% city. It started out around 15 mpg which isnt what everyone else seems to be getting here. But now 13.6, thats not a whole lot better than my 2004 5.4 was getting at 120K miles. Really disappointed at this time; I thought i would be doing a lot better.

If you were doing that type of commute with 2.0 liters instead of 3.5 twin turbocharged and half the weight you'd probably be getting about 20mpg.
20mpg would be pretty bad for a 2.0.

I don't think that there is anything wrong with the engine. It's more to do with how your using it.

That's my opinion anyhow.

It could also be the junk California gas - what brand are you using?

I am using AMPM gas because that is the company card provided so its not the cost that bothers me I just figured I'd be getting much better mpg's, especially when I read what others are getting.

It's a Cali thing MHP. WE have cleanest, but crappiest MPG gasoline on the market. I don't know how the Eco-****'s think burning more of a cleaner fuel is better than slightly more pollutant but better MPG fuel. In the end Californians voted for this (remember AB-32) . It was the assembly bill refiners were against because it would make it very expensive to produce gasoline with such tight restrictions and also force them to reduce green house gas emissions by 30%. Since everybody heard Refiners were against it, they voted opposite thinking they would stick it to big oil. Well, you now see where that thinking gets us... I mean them ( I work for the industry and knew better). It's only going to get worse in the near future when the AB 32 goes into full effect. Refinerys will reduce output in order to meet the 30% drop. Tesoro just bought our refinery just to have the capcity when they need to shut down their FCC (main gasoline producing unit) plant in Wilmington. If you go to Vegas, fll up there and watch your MPG jump about 1.5 MPG. Nevada dsn't require such extreme fuel and cars get better MPG. Your MPG is right in line with mine 75% city driving. Nothing wrong with your truck, just our Gov't and voters.

AM/PM gas is Arco, which is the worst of the bad in California for gas mileage, along with Costco. The only gas out there that I get even close to "normal" mileage with is Chevron or Valero.

I would love to see how the people that complain about the mpgs actually drive their truck.I have seen many people that say i drive so easy yet i get crappy fuel mileage, then when i ride with them and no wonder why it gets crappy mpgs, jack rabbit starts, 2500 to 3000 rpm, on and off the gas.. slaming on the brakes right when they get to the redlight...

My worse tank was my first tank and it was 16.8 mpg's.. I wasnt to happy with that so started watching what made the numbers go up and down... Now i get 19 EASY(last 4 tanks) and 20.5mpg on my last fillup...

Main thing i do is easy take off, let it shift around at 1800 to 2000 rpm.
Coming up to a light i just coast until i get there.. Usually put the cruise on 70 on the short drive home..

I'm sure different gas would make a difference but i dont see where it would make alot of difference. Maybe 2 or 3mpgs at the worse?

So it all depends on the driver..

Now its time to show off a little bit

KRC, those are pretty good numbers but everyone knows there are no hills in Texas; are there even any stop lights that you have to sit at? I am going to take your advise and see what changing my driving habits will do but I think hydro1 is probably right; gas sucks here in the sunshine Dem state. Dam tree huggers.

If the company gave you a gas card, use premium.

What are Hills?

This does include sitting at numerous stop lights.. Thats what i meant by coasting up to the light, i usually gain .2 or .3 on the onboard display by doing that.. The display doesnt go down until i take off but when the next light is coming up just let er coast and i get it back to where it was before accelerating..

Just to be clear i wasnt being rude about the way YOU drove, just people in general when they complain about mpgs..

Good Luck!

1. They do track the gas I use.

2. I didn't think these trucks run good on premium without a tune.

^ I've seen no better MPG with premium, but Ford has stated the EB makes 385hp/ 430 lb-ft on 91 octane. I put that in just in case a stop light race may need some extra oommph

Ford even recommends premium when towing, especially in hot weather. The stock tune can take advantage of it.

That's on 87.

I'd believe it, but I've never seen that in writing.
