I've got an Ecoboost. Originally was going to go with the 5.0 cause I wanted the V8 sound and didn't want to fork out the extra money for the eco (mpg saving vs upfront cost etc). Then my dealer gave me a rebate for a free upgrade to the eco, so I said sure why not.

So far I love it. I'm getting about 17mpg mixed driving. I tend to gun it when driving shorter trips and enjoy that torque, but when I cruise on the highway for a good distance the mpg keeps creeping up.

So far I have about 430 miles on it.

On July 3rd or 5th I will be driving from DC to LA. So we shall see how she does then. Looking forward to the drive.

I would love the mpg that everyone here is getting; I have a 2012 Eco with 3.55 and I'm getting 13.9 average over 4 tanks here in so cal burning AMPM Gas. I'd love to see something over 15 and I would be happy.

AMPM - isn't that Arco? That's the worst mileage gas in the whole state of California along with Costco. When I'm out there I use Chevron or Valero.

If you drive with common sense and care a lot about MPG get the EB. Both are great engines, put 30k on my EB Screw 157" 4x4 and averaged 19.1 mpg. My 5.0 145" Screw has been 17.7 mpg (4k miles)...

There have been a handful of guys on here that have owned both and had success with each one.

Same here Bluejay. Of course, now with the price of gas $750 won't buy much.

My daily commute is about 35 miles each way. All flat interstate driving at around 70. I also don't plan on trailering anything. Or going off-road. Any info or opinions will be gladly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
It sounds like you may have given up your previous truck for maybe better mpg's? I think most peoples concern when buying a truck is finding something dependable, and we all would like better MPG's. If you are traveling north to south or east to west it probably will make a difference too. The gearing, wind, tire size, and traffic will also affect the mpg's.Driving habits? I drive 12.5 miles to work, going north to south at max speed of 60 I got 23.2 and back going south to north i got 22.1 and thats with 3.55 gears,K&N CAI and Borla S-type single exhaust resonator delete pipe. This was mixed driving from 40-60 babying it. If I drive it hard mixed i usually average about 19.8. I only have 10K on my 2012 FX2 2wd super cab, but I totally love it and I'm sure most EB owners will say the same. These engines have been out a couple years and there are post with problems with both, but if you are buying new now 2013 up your chances of less problems should be better as Ford addresses issue in each. I would drive both for a day each and then pick which truck I liked the most, particularly your daily route with each one, look at the mpgs and try for the same gearing too. I don't think you can go wrong with either, just pick which puts the biggest grin on your face!

I hope you are not under the assumption that by calling the 5.0 "proven," that it is in anyway related to the 302 cu in/5.0's of years ago. The 5.0 seems to be a great motor, but no more "proven" than the ecoboost. Not trying to bust your chops, I just want to clarify.

Since the 5.0L is based on the "Triton/modular" line of engines introduced in 1991, where the 3.5L Ecoboost is based on the "Duratec" engines introduced a few years later, they're both proven. However, the Ecoboost is new to having a turbo from the factory. Ergo, the 5.0L is far more proven.

That said, I'd trust either engine to get the job done. Especially considering the torture test that Ford puts new engines through. But my personal preference will always be a V8. If nothing else, just for the pleasing sound they naturally have.

Maybe you are confusing the 4.6's stroked out to 5 litres and if I'm not mistaken Ford offered a 5L crate motor based on the 4.6 and was eligible for the CanAm series. 5L "cammer"

Ford wanted the coyote to be able to be built on the same line as the modulars and for the most part that is where the similarities cease. Just wanted to clear that up.

With that said I am confident in FMC and would easily buy the ecoboost or the coyote 5L. The tuning available to both motors is fantastic but I'd have to give the nod to the ecoboost tuning right now which is important to me because I tow a boat and will most likely tow a 5th wheel in the future.

4 motors available in the F150 and they are all excellent, just depends on what YOU need.

Bill,

I was in your same situation. 5.0 or the eco. Never driven either but had heard nothing but how mighty the eco was and I wanted it before I ever bought it. Finally test drove both back to back with same set up. The 5.0 first then the eco. Took the same exact route and to the best of my abilities duplicated the same driving style on both. No matter what I done I just was not impressed with the eco. Not saying its a bad engine, just didnt want it. I guess I was so hyped on just how "great" it is it didnt deliver for me. The 5.0 is more than adequate for my needs as a daily driver with the ability to pull anything I have on hand. You can see my mileage below and I am absolutely happy with it.

Go drive both, I bet you will make the decision easily.

This^^^ Apart from bore spacing, deck height, and bell housing pattern, the 5.0L Coyote is a decidedly different engine from the Triton V8's. They don't even share the same firing order.

I had one as a rental while my Ecoboost got the CAC replaced. It's a good engine, but I'm not a fan of high-strung engines having previously owned a Powerstroke Diesel. The 5.0 has a great sound but you have to mash the pedal to get the thing to move.
