Rear window break.

This may sound odd just wondering if anyone else has heard of anything like this. Have a 2010 FX4 crew cab, was driving home from work, out of no where theirs a very loud bang that sounds like something hit the roof extremely hard. Pulled over to find out what happened and I see the passenger rear window is all smashed but still holding together. You can't really tell from outside the cab unless you look really close. Weather was snowy/rainy all day, didn't see anyone or any objects around, was just really weird it sounded like the roof being hit and not the window. Should also add I saw no dents or marks on the roof. Basically the only other thing I have in mind other then an objecting hitting it, not sure is possible, but how materials can shrink or expend when heat or cold changes occur.

Glass these days is fragile. Temperature expansion and contraction combined with added stress of say a power window that isn't quite aligned properly and it goes. There was another post about this but, I think that one was a drivers side window

Was your rear defrost on? Every post I've read about this is when the rear defrost is on and the window shatters. I've disabled mine so I won't have to deal with this problem. Personally, I don't care if there's a rear defrost, but the heated mirrors are handy.

Yes the defrost was on. Sounds like I will be disabling it also. Just calling around to see how much to get it replaced, first place said just over $600. If I'm gonna disable the defrost anyway maybe glass without it will be a bit cheaper.

If you want to disable the circuit that feeds the rear defrost, it's fuse #32 in the engine bay fuse box. It's a 40 amp fuse. I just pulled the fuse and no more rear defrost for me. The good thing is that the heated mirrors are fed by a different circuit so they will still work.

It happened to me a couple of months ago. I brought it in to the dealership and the whole window assembly was replaced under warranty. My truck was warming up in the driveway (remote start, defroster on) and my daughter was sitting in the back seat when it shattered. Mine was also the passenger side pane of glass.

After that I turned off the defroster in the remote start settings and just turn it on manually if it's needed.

Thumbs down

Add me to the shattered window club.

I was backing out of my driveway (slowly) yesterday morning (it was in the mid-20s here) when I heard an extremely loud bang. Scared me good. Turns out it was the driver side window exploding.

Luckily the plastic in the glass held it together.

And here is the interesting part - Before I backed out I tried turning on the defroster and it did not work. The light would not turn on - I tried hitting the button a couple times. I gave up, put it in gear, and started backing out.
After it broke, I tried the button again and the indicator light came on.

So possibly there was a short in the rear defroster that caused the glass to break??????

I stopped by the dealer after work and they took some pics to try and get it covered under warranty. Have not heard back yet today.
(they also covered the window in plastic. Hopefully it holds till the new one shows up)

It looks almost normal from the outside

But from the inside you can see all the cracks

Mine looked exactly the same. I had it replaced under warranty so you should be able to as well.

Read most of the posts on this issue, is the problem to any specific years? It appears
mostly 2010.

has anyone that this happened too have window tint? I have 20% over the factory privacy glass and at least that will help hold it together. Im sure that will void my warranty.

Mine was a 2011.

Mine had no extra tint.

In order to void the warranty the dealership would need to prove that the tint caused the issue. Since it has happened to many other trucks without tint I think it would be difficult for them to prove.
