Spec is 5w-20, probably in the manual and on the oil filler cap. Thinner oil helps achieve quick lubrication to top end of motor, specifically VCT. I would only use MC filters, they have proper anti drain back valving.

Not quite the same 5.4 but you get the point :-)

The MC filter is made by Purolator. Get that 10w30 OUT of there and some 5w20 in it.

^Related to the post above, we have a 2001 E-350 conversion at work(I work at a hotel) that has 250K on it with the 5.4 as well. Mind you, this is 250k miles plus virtually unmeasurable idle time(during the winter the damn thing runs constantly). Havent had to do anything more major than replace a battery or blower motor.....

no issues with my 09 and 55k. i change my own oil and use a synblend 5w20. but every now and then my local dealer offers oil change and tire rotation for 39.95. the ad says up to 5 quarts but mine takes 7 and they never charge me more. makes no sense to do it myself for that price and the fact that they rotate the tires also.

I purchased new, a 2010 screw 4x4 F-150 with the 5.4 on Jan 8th 2010 and traded it on Nov 6th 2012. The 5.4 had 130,000 miles on it and the only thing I done to it was change the plugs at 110,000 miles. I used 5w 20 MC oil. MC oil filter and MC air filter. This truck was used on the farm in heavy dust and dirt at times also. I traded for a 2013 F-150 with the 5.0 and currently have 14,100 miles on it.
