Argh, wasted windshield at 600 miles!!!

Well it happened this weekend on a trip to show my family the new Plat. On the freeway and a truck throws up a rock and I get a double star in the center of my windshield...boy was I <not happy> about that Anyway I had it repaired this week and it still looks pretty bad. The cracks are gone but the "scar" in the windshield is still very noticable. Anyone know if there is a way to polish a windshield? I have a dremel that does 30K RPM would that work with polishing compound...or am I stuck with this?

Cool

Happened to me too. Had the truck for two months and Bang! It was just a little pin *****, but the next morning it split out both sides about four inches. By the end of the day it was seven on the right, six on the left. Insurance covered it under comprehensive (100.00 deductable). Had Safelite do it. They did ok with the windshield, but damaged my paint and left glass chips and shars all over the interior. I highly UN-recommend them. List on the windshield was about 526.00 plus an install kit? 37.00. and labor was 114.00.

Glass company scratched my w/s opening most of the way around when i had my w/s replaced. They tried to pass it off as acceptable, but i made em pay to have it re-painted. They even had to remove the w/s again to have the paint work done properly. It had already been rock chipped again, so they wound up cracking the w/s in removing it. It was a costly adventure for them to see to the end.

You should have addressed it at the moment of pick-up.

I did. They came and did it in my driveway. Funny thing is, I took pictures before they arrived. I take a lot of pics and always have my camera with me. I checked the truck over before they left, showed the idiot what he had done, made him make a note of it on my receipt, then took it to my dealer and they paid to have the paint repaired. I would post pics of what they did but I don't know how to do all that URL code stuff (I don't do any "social media", or photo-network stuff). I may post a few in my albums tho......But yea, Mr. Hotlap, When you have it replaced, make sure you be vigilant and check your truck over real well. The odiot that did mine tried to hide the chips by trying to cover it up with the plastic cover at the base of the windshield. Thought he was slick........

We are getting a little off topic, but the easiest way to post pics, is FROM your albums here. Once the pic is in your album, it is assigned a pic url (you will see it under your picture). From there it's easy.

I lost the factory windshield in my '11 @ 457 miles. On the interstate and a car had passed me, their tires picked up and flung a rock from the centerline of the highway right into my windshield. Bah. Got it replaced OEM but feel your pain.

Thanks everyone for the feedback - much appreciated. Guess I just have to live with it for now - not going to replace it as I know that as soon as I do, I'll get another chip.

I had one of my rides in a body shop and while it was there I told them to replace the cracked windshield.

They shattered the windshield while removing it, didn't tape up the defroster openings, didn't mention it to me, so the next time I turned on the defroster shards of glass sprayed everywhere.

I thunk "WTF"?

Went home and dropped the heater shield, cut myself about 10 times and worked for about 6 hrs cleaning glass.

Now, before having a windshield replaced, I mask off the defroster ducts myself.

I just had a rock fly up the other day and hit my windshield on the passenger side. I looked over quickly with concern but thankfully no noticeable damage. I usually avoid the usual culprits like following an 18 wheeler or lifted truck with no mud flaps. Funny thing it was a subaru this time.
Definitely try to find a reputable shop to do the work and photo document it all. Also check the seal over real good as I know guys who have had leaking issues with replacements.

I haven't checked the aftermarket price for the F150 windshield yet. A few years ago I had the windshield replaced in a '99 Ford Taurus. Just under $200 installed here in my garage. Is the F150 really that much higher?

I was told by a friend that does glass work the list price on the Platinum windshield is around $900. The aftermarket replacement was more like $150 or so. Every windshield of every car I have ever owned has been chipped and cracked. Twice it has happened before I made the first payment. I gave up on getting them fixed, they will just be broken again. I'm to the point where I am debating just throwing a rock at the windshield before I leave the dealership. Maybe that will stop the rocks from trying to smash my truck up.

If you contact your Insurance guy, tell him your not satisified with the repair, they just might ante' up for a new windshield. Never know unless you give 'er a try. It would drive me nuts everytime I saw the inperfections.

BTW, don't forget you have a "sound screen" windshield in the Plat.

It does bug me every time I see it, I may end up having it replaced but many times "the cure is worse than the problem". Yes on the SoundScreen windshield, probably more $$'s than the regular one I'm sure.
