I have a 2009 4.6L 3V F-150 XLT with about 50,000km on it. Out of warranty period.

It is currently parked in my underground parking, on a level surface with around 1/2 of a tank of fuel.

If I try to start it, it starts fine, and 5 seconds later it dies and the little oil can graphic shows in the display.

I checked the oil level, which is totally fine.

Grabbed a code reader, but there are no codes.

Help! What should I be checking? Oil pressure sensor? Oil pump? Is the oil can graphic just a generic graphic for Check Engine? Why would it not throw a code? Ideas?

(Edit: I figure that the oil pressure light is likely on just because the engine is set to the on position but the oil pressure is low because the engine is actually off, so I'm thinking it's not an oil issue...)

Did the battery get replaced recently? It sounds like the idle control is not reset. Check the maual for the procedure if that's the case.

 

MAF plugged in?

 

No, this battery is the original one, and has never been disconnected. MAF is indeed connected. It should throw a code if the MAF is an issue, right? I can't get the motor to stay running for more than about 5 seconds before it panics and quits on me....

 

Anything added to the truck recently? Do you anything aftermarket such as a remote start? Reason I ask is that based on various posts over the years I get the impression that the truck's electrical system doesn't like being tapped into because it is based on something called a "Can-Bus". Also, some aftermarket remotes are no good or they are installed poorly.

Other possibility might be bad fuel or water in the fuel?

 

I had the same problem before with an older truck. I was told it was a vacuum leak. just a thought

If it doesn't idle, I'd be suspect of something gumming up the 'Idle Air Control' circuit.

 

Check the fuel pressure and has the fuel filter ever been changed?

 

The fuel filter from what I understand is inside the fuel pump which is inside the tank, and is not a serviceable item. The manual describes it as lasting the lifetime of the vehicle.

 

Unless they have changed things drastically, there should be some kind of inline fuel filter along the frame rail. I think what you are thinking about is the "sock" that is on the pick up on the fuel pump. The fuel filter is an often overlooked maintainence item.........But I guess I could be wrong.

 

There is no in-line filter. Only filter is the in the tank. Sounds more like a computer issue to me. But what do I know? Im just a gynecologist. If your truck was pregnant or had PMS, then I could help you.

 

Well I guess "lifetime" is a relative term. I would lean towards it's life being over and may be time for a fuel pump/filter replacement.

But, I regress, check the fuel pressure. And as someone else posted, water in the fuel will cause that too. I still think it's a fuel issue.

if where your filling up has ethanol in the fuel( most places im sure), ive had the same issue in my 09. ( just traded it off )
there were a couple shell stations if I filled up , near empty, the truck would start, run like it had 6 plugs missing, and die.
they actually told me this had happened more than one time, stated ethanol was mixed incorrectly and there could have been an un reasonably high content,

I was told by dealer to hold the pedal to the floor then try to start. this would actually shut fuel delivery off, clear out everything.

they no longer have that issue, at those stations. but the above method worked.
