How do you like the ecoboost motor

Who has and what do you think of the ecoboost motor? Thinking about buying a new truck and that's the motor I'm looking at so I wanted some input before I buy. Thanks

This is a thread that keeps popping up over and over and over....

I currently own both a 2011 5.0L Platinum and 2013 EcoBoost FX4. This is my second EcoBoost. I have never had any issues with either the Eco or 5.0L. I also don't tow any heavy loads, and I sometimes enjoy more "spirited" driving.

So with that, here is what you can expect:

You're going to hear from some of the hardcore V8 guys on how bad the EcoBoost is and how there is nothing like a V8.

You're going to hear from some of the hardcore EcoBoost guys how the Eco is such a wonder and nothing like it.

You're going to hear from some Eco owners (and very few relative to total owners) that have had some real serious issues and have gotten rid of their Ecos, and a lot from folks like myself who have never had any issues at all.

You're going to hear a lot from both camps how the Eco doesn't live up to the mileage hype (with exception of a few that can claim otherwise due to their individual setups and driving habits)....it general, it doesn't.

That being said, I love the Eco; it's fast, very responsive, great at high altitudes due to the forced induction so power is always there, and love the sound of the turbos spooling up. Low end grunt is amazing but loses some steam at higher rpm ranges. Mileage is generally same as the 5.0L or even worse if you keep the turbos spooled up too often, but has the potential of bettering the 5.0L if you can learn to drive like a little old lady (I can't).

The 5.0L really gets decent mileage considering it's a V8, has a great exhaust sound, and while not as responsive and not near as fast as the Eco, its power delivery is very linear and strong throughout the power range (so I think better for towing).

I agree with Dawg on everything except the last half of the last sentence. I think the stronger low end torque of the EB makes it the better motor if you plan to pull a lot. It has amazing power off idle and holds it there until the very top end of the tach where it seems to drop off. I have a feeling this could be changed with a tune + intake adjustments if it really bothers you.

Yeah, I won't argue except responding to reviews where they mention how the Eco can fizzle out with heavy loads on long grades (so pulling at the top end). But I also agree, you could get a tuner....so good point!

I love mine. I've owned it for 22 months and haven't had any issues at all with it. I installed a tuner and some other goodies a couple months ago. It was pretty impressive stock but it's a whole different animal now.

I've owned mine for a year and it's been great. Averaged 17mpg over 3500 miles (logged by my trip B) with 75% city driving. The only service visit its had was for the shift-linkage recall.

I got my EB Dec 28th, and it now has 7000 miles on it, and so far, I really like it. It has so much bottom end/low rpm grunt/torque, that you really don't need to rev it past 3500 rpm.

I really like the way it pulls hills without ever downshifting. Also pulls my single axle enclosed trailer very well. I can lug it down to 1100 rpm, 38 mph in manual mode and it will stay in 6th gear and will pull itself out of it with out throwing a fit, amazing.

I have driven the 5.0s and they sound great when you wind them up, but they can't compete with the low end torque of a turbo engine.

I'm one of those guys that haul the family (every so often a race trailer or boat) but I didn't care much which of the two engines I got. With the options I wanted, I ended up with the EB. I haven't been disappointed but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have been disappointed with the V8 either. I've driven both and liked them both equally. They do drive a little different but both can get the job done.

I haven't driven an EB yet, (hope to soon), but just purchased a '13 5.0. The only engine I can compare it to is the 5.4 Triton engine that came in my 2009 & 2005. I like the 5.0 much better. Seems more spirited and eager to rev than the 5.4 and Ford did a nice job balancing the sound, healthy sounding at idle and you can hear it just enough in normal driving then it sounds great when getting into the throttle. Really like it, and would have probably like the EB as well.

I have had mine for 18 months now with 17,000mi with no problems. It puts a smile on my face every time i get behind the wheel. Speaking from only my own experience towing our 7500lb trailer I have never felt my truck fizzle out of power on long grades. I am able to climb most hills in 5th gear at 2100rpm's maintaining the 65mph speed limit. It certainly is not breaking a sweat with the weight I am towing. No tuner needed hear! Doesn't mean i wouldn't like to have one though just for sh*** and giggles...
