eco boost or 5.0l?
Fiddy, yeah I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with one of your points, big time. The 5.0 downshifts "on most hills"? No sir. In fact, the only hills my 5.0 has downshifts on are very steep hills that my good friend's EB downshifts on as well.
Downshifts on hills has as much to do with gearing.

I live on a road with a low 40 mph speed limit. This road is a series of hills and curves. My 5.0 has 3.55 gears not 3.73's but it only downshifts on one hill from 6th to 5th at that speed. When I get off that road and get on the interstate which has some more hills, I climb up to 70-75 mph and my RPM's are leveled out at 2200. My truck holds 6th gear all the way, and unless it is a very, very, steep hill it may drop to 5th. But in my daily commute on the interstate it never downshifts at those speeds. But I understand the point that the EB makes all that torque low with the turbos, so that might explain the close gas mileage difference between the two.
I own a 2012 Ecoboost and must say that I am not that impressed with the gas mileage. I do however miss the sound and feel of a V8 (traded in my 2011 5.0 Mustang for the truck). Overall its a great truck, just a bit worried about the longevity of the new untested Ecoboost in the real world. With that said I have had no issues with the Eco and have about 4500 K on it.
Well its not new but its new to me... it has 12k miles on it...
its a 2012 F150 xlt with captain chairs. its also a SCrew 4wd 5.0L with the sync system...
so far i love it.. it out performs my 5.4L i have. I dont love the color but ill deal with it... its a coperish brown color...

Well I have to disagree with you disagreeing.
The day I decided on an EB over a 5.0L I took both out,in 3.55 and 3.73 configurations(4 trucks total) and drove the exact same test route in each.
5.0L shifted a lot more than the EB...well the EB just really didnt shift, just spool up.
Quiet,no revving or shifting.
Sold the EB for me.
I don't know how people can face themselves after purchasing the ecojoke motor...
I drove one and was so disappointed after all the leg humping going on this forum and others (but then again Edge programmers and magnadrone exhausts are also drummed up to be all that on here also)...
my buddy has an ecojoke powered F-150 and he's wishing he had gone with the 5.0

Buyers regret most times is people not doing their homework.
From a mpg standpoint, I can only compare the 5.4 to my EB.
2009 F150 - 96203 miles of data on my iPhone app. 13.5 mpg overall
2012 F150 - 23344 miles of data on same app - 16.8 mpg overall (24% increase)
Trucks used the same, for sales in the Iowa area. Running E-10 ethanol fuel, heavy highway, cruise control, and average speed on my EB since new is 47mph based on elapsed time vs. odometer.
I've also towed my Jeep with both trucks, and that is where the big differences became obvious. Any headwind with the 5.4L and it was in 5th or 4th, and had to hit 3rd gear several times towing to South Dakota. The EB does very well holding 6th, and towing fuel economy over the same Black Hills trip went from 8.1mpg on the 5.4L to 10.3mpg on the EB. Doesn't sound like a lot, but it is a 27% improvement, which is very impressive in reality over a 1300 mile trip.
Very few people are going to 'regret' their purchases unless they've had significant issues. My purchase exceeded my expectations on fuel economy improvement over the 2009, and has been issue free to date, so I'm in the satisfied camp. I have two coworkers with over 100k on their ecoboosts with no issues, which weighs heavily on my opinion since I am in direct contact with those trucks, and can compare to them in person, and not just accept the word of someone online.
Just as a side note, I ran to a customer Thursday. 68 miles straight north into a headwind, then returned on same route. 16.7mpg going up, 24.9 mpg coming home. That's a good example of how much the wind can affect these trucks.

I know 2 guys with ecos that love them with zero issues. My father in laws work truck is a 5.0 and he tells me how great it is too (hes a Nissan titan guy). Ive driven a few ecos and one 5.0 but I cant compare because the timing and conditions were different.
It's been a year since I bought my truck and I haven't lost a minute's sleep regretting the decision. No matter which engine you go with, both the 5.0 and the Ecoboost are a huge improvement over the powertrains they replaced. I'm perfectly happy with my Ecoboost and the 17mpg average I've gotten over the past 3500 miles.
Seriously, not getting the Ecoboost hate on here. This is worse than the old V10 vs Powerstroke debates.
At the end of the day all that really matters is that we all have great taste in trucks because we're all proudly driving our Fords.

I agree. I enjoy the consistent low end power the Ecoboost has. It best suits my driving, and towing style.
I traded in my 4.6 with 190k mi and it's great not having to hear the motor spin up to make power or get up a hill.

Test drove the 5.0 and Eco last night back to back. Same exact route reset mpg at exact spots within a foot or two. The cruise set at 60 and 5.0 reported 22.3 while the Eco came in at 15.6 kind of bummed but oh we'll. I bought the 5.0 and for more reasons than just fuel numbers. Honestly wasn't impressed with the Eco. And before I get lit on fire I'm not bashing it, it's just not for me.
