Oil Consumption
Oil Consumption
A few days after purchasing my 2012 F150 5 Litre, I checked its oil. I added one litre to bring it up to the full mark. Since then, it has remained at the full line. This morning, on the same ground, it was down about an eigth of an inch on the stick.
Is it normal for these engines to use a little oil during break in? I have less tha 4,000 kms on the truck and would like to soon convert it to full synthetic oil.

It can be normal for ANY engine with ANY mileage on it to use some oil. Ford does NOT consider oil consumption excessive for warranty purposes unless it burns more than a quart every 1000 miles.
Tip: There are VERY few "synthetics" that are any better than the standard Motorcraft semi-synthetic oil.

Thanks for your reply.
I think I would be having a serious chat with Ford if I was using a quart every 1,000 miles in a new truck.
In my previous truck, I had excellent luck using Valvoline full synthetic. I will likely stick with it.

I was a Ford technician up until about 6 months ago and saw this frequently on both 5.0L F150s and 5.0L Mustangs. they seemed to consume some oil during the "engine break-in period" but it ceased as they got more miles put on them. perhaps as the rings are still seating.
