2012 or 2013 Platinum?
2012 or 2013 Platinum?
I am a member but it has been so long since I posted that I cannot retrieve my old username JTR so I added the - so I can post something.
I am trading my 05 FX4 F150 Supercab and have been looking for a while into trying to grab one of the 2012 Platinums for a good price or if it is worth it to spend a little more to get the 2013. I have read/seen that the 2013's have made some changes to the HID headlights/new grill. Did they make any changes with the navigation/voice activated Ford SYNC? In the 2012 can you use the voice activation to change the heat/add destination for navigation?
Is the hood design different?
I like the HID lights but don't know how big of a difference they make from the 2012 headlights.
I have two Platinums that are available with the same options/color etc but one is a 2012 and on is a 2013. I haven't talked specific numbers but I think I could get the 2012 for about $3,000 less than the 2013. Is it worth it?

The communications/nav/entertainment setup is all new for 2013. It is MyFord Touch. Hood is the same but the grille and headlights are changed. Every model has a new grille except for Raptor. If you get the trailer tow mirrors, they will power fold and power extend unlike the 2012. One new interior color for Platinum.
I'd say $3000 is worth it considering some of that will be lost in resale if you go with the 2012. Also, the 2013 will have some upgraded parts on EcoBoost that the 2012 will not have. 2013 or 2014 all the way. When the next gens come out and people are asking about the old (current) model, people are going to recommend the 2013's and 2014 to anyone who asks.

JTR,
The only noticable difference will be in the radio/touchscreen design and bezel, no major updates to SYNC. Ask to play with the SYNC, if you are unsure--any dealership/private seller wanting to move inventory will be happy to grant that request. If both trucks are exactly the same, look at how many miles are on the 2012, and go over it with a fine-toothed comb. Are there little imperfections in the seat you might not like after the fact? Little scratches on the dash/cluster that might seem unsightly after a few days? Mileage? How was it used? 2WD or 4WD? (These could easily apply to the '13, instead). Questions like that help you make an informed decision, AND help do away with buyer's remorse later.
Decide which truck best fits your needs, and I say go for it. Enjoy whichever one you choose

MyFord Touch is based off of SYNC so it is different. It also adds voice control to more systems and has a new 8-inch touch screen mounted in the center stack. This package also adds a media hub with two USB ports, an SD card reader and audio/video input jacks. But the biggest difference is going to be some of the bugs have been worked out on the 2013 powertrain related parts. These unadvertised secret updates are what I would be more concerned with!

Given your unique situation, I'd go with the 2013. Mainly because there are so many updates by going to MyFord Touch over the previous generation of Navigation models. You'll also benefit if future updates to the system are sent out whereas those of us with the older generation will probably never see any updates.
go with the 2013
I feel the 2013 is worth it for a few reasons. 1) the HID's are MUCH better than the halogens on the 2012. 2) (don't think I'm nuts) The POI icons on the NAV screen show specific brands (McDonalds, BK, Wendys ets) with the 2013's. On the 2012 and earlier they would only show generic "fast food place". I also think the my Ford touch is better, less buttons on the dash, the USB ports are also in the center console, which is better to hide phones, ipods, etc. I felt stongly enough to trade my 2012 for a 2013, didn't even take too bad of a "hit".

I'm not a big fan of Ford touch. Wife has it in her 2011 MKX. Has been a pain all along and there will be yet another update. Ford still has issues with the Ford touch and for that reason Ford has consumer reports very negative rating.
HID headlights are what interest's me very much. Living out in the country, i find the headlights on my 2012 rather lousy and wish i had HID's like on my wife's car.
All in all, i would go with the 2013.
