2009-2010 5.4 vs 2011 5.0 MPG

hey everyone. I currently own a 2006 ranger and am looking to do the "fullsize mod" (ditching the ranger for a fullsize)

stuck on what to get though. i dont need stupid crazy power, the 5.4 would be perfectly fine for me i feel. main thing is fuel economy on the highway more than anything.

i drive 900+ miles a week commuting to and from work. so i want the best possible. i know, its a truck, and i need a truck, but if one gets slightly better than the other, then thats a win.

will be a supercab 4x4, eventually levelled on larger tires. which is my best bet? the 5.4, or the 5.0?

here are some of the trucks im interested in.

2011 Ford F-150 XLT *ONE OWNER LOCAL TRADE-IN* - Manitoba Cars For Sale - Kijiji Manitoba Canada.

2011 Ford F-150 XLT 4X4 *MINT CONDITION* - Manitoba Cars For Sale - Kijiji Manitoba Canada.

2011 Ford F-150 XLT - 5.0 V8, 4x4, Ext. Cab, nicely equipped. - Manitoba Cars For Sale - Kijiji Manitoba Canada.

2009 Ford F-150 XLT / Loaded 4x4 - Manitoba Cars For Sale - Kijiji Manitoba Canada.

2010 F150 XLT-XTR Loaded 4x4 - Manitoba Cars For Sale - Kijiji Manitoba Canada.

2009 Ford F-150 XLT / Supercrew / Loaded 4x4 Pickup Truck - Manitoba Cars For Sale - Kijiji Manitoba Canada.

so, real world MPG 5.4 vs 5.0?
my commute is 90% highway, at 60mph

If mileage is a factor, and running 1400 km a week is a deciding factor, I think you should go with the '11 5.0. My 5.4 is a pig on fuel.

On a side note, all your listings are through dealers, and subsequently add pst and gst to the price. Why not go with a private sale? No tax at all. Less then an hours drive north would land you http://manitoba.kijiji.ca/c-cars-veh...AdIdZ427374957

yeah i know dealers add pst. just way better buying from reputable dealers than private. unless you have a good mechanic that will go over a privately sold truck for free lol.

im also going to try and cut down on my driving lol. i am leaning towards the 5.0. but if the initial purchase price of a 5.4 is low enough ill probably go with it.

again this is all just theoretical. havent decided if im going to go this route yet.

right now in my ranger i average 17-18 MPG mostly highway driving. will need the same, or better to make it worth while

well, I have a 09 5.4 and I know people with newer trucks with both the 5.0 and Ecoboost, all 4x4's. I get 13mpg city and 17-18mpg highway. Compared to mine, they only get 1mpg better in the city and up to 2 mpg better on the highway. I'm sure your mpg's will drop some if you do a level plus bigger tires.

im just trying to see what would be best for me. price wise.
initially to purchase a 09/10 it would be about 6-7 grand cheaper. and if it only gets 1-2 mpg less, it would probably be worth getting an 09/10

well i have had a 07 5.4 then a 10 5.4 and now a 12 5.0 the 07 was good but when ford added the 6 speed it woke the 5.4 up! now my 10 was a towing beast but a drinker! now my 5.0 is a great truck but it don't pull like the 5.4 did. now the 5.0 gets as much as 4 mpg more than the 5.4 if you keep it at 65 mph now once you hit 70 your throwing the mileage out the window!

if your using your truck as a DD i would go with the 5.0 if you think you could be towing a lot i would go with the 5.4 when all is said and done get aether truck motor you want both are strong and in the end its you you have to please.

well speeds will be kept around 55-60 MPH since 60 mph is the speed limit here.
so hard to get real world MPG claims when searching online since 90% of answers will be from americans whos speed limits are higher haha.

i will be towing on occasion, quads, trailers with trees/branches, and ill be using the bed a lot for the same stuff. been reading a few threads on the 5.4 and it seems the 09/10 with the 6 speed really made a huge difference. thinking thats the way ill go. with an economy tune from 5star, a CAI and catback exhaust im betting it will be around 19-20 MPG at 60 mph.

really leaning towards this one

any word on the 5.4 reliability in the 09/10's? heard they had a few issues in the past, spark plugs. cam phazers etc.

One other option to consider is the 3 valve 4.6L. It was only offered in 09-10, and it has the 6 speed trans (the 2v 4.6L was only a 4 spd...easy way to identifiy them). Coworker has one is his 09 Crew and loves it. He feels its plenty powerful for daily driving. It has roughly the same HP as the 5.4L, and less torque. This engine was only offered in XLT's and lower trims, but I bet the 4.6L 3V would get better mileage than the 5.0L.

In the Mustang world the 5.0L definitely gets worse mileage than the 3v 4.6L.

If you are buying the '11 it is still covered under full warranty. Kinda makes the whole inspection a moot point. You are talking about 2 - 2 1/2 grand in taxes here. I think you are making a mistake, but it's your money.

My truck does mostly city and I might average 14 mpg. It's been a while since I actually paid attention to it.

i believe you are expecting waaaayyyyyyyy too much from a CAI and catback. Do a little more digging in here and you will find that the CAI is a waste of time and money. It's pretty to look at, but thats where the benefits will end. Catback will do nothing too. I have a magnaflow SIDO catback, and my mpg didn't change one single bit. It got louder, and sounds a whole lot better, looks better, but again, the mpg benefits were not anywhere to be seen. My 5 star tune, in theory might have made my mpg better, but it made the truck soooo much more fun to drive that my excessive acceleration habits ruin any potential fuel savings.

I'm going to stick with my suggestion and go with the '11 5.0, at a private seller. If you wanted an inspection, take it to your dealer and pay the $130. It is still miles cheaper than paying the taxes on a dealer truck.

5.0

The 5.0 will getter mileage than either engine, 3V 4.6L or 5.4L.
I have 3600 miles on my 5.0 with 3.31 rear end. The LOWEST average tank average has been 18.1 MPG. My driving is mixed, 70% highway and 30% city. At 60 MPH you WILL get a consistent 20 MPG, perhaps a more.
Also the 5.0 is just bad ***.

ya with 3;31 out back you better get good milage but its not a good towing gear. yet it can tow but it just don't have the power or muscle like say 3;55 or 3;73s do
i love my 5.0 over my 5.4 for the MPG but not when it comes to towing!

+1 on this. My 4.6 3v with the 6 spd gets me around 19-21 mpg highway depending on the season. 4x4 scab xlt. I have the 3.73 ls diff.

I loved having a 3.73 in my 2007 Lariat. It really helped the 5.4 out of the hole. When I needed to pull anything it was super strong! Unloaded I feel like the 2012 5.0 is much quicker. I wont be towing anything significant with this ride so I "settled" on the 3.31 which is still rated to tow 8k/13500 GCVWR in my current configuration vs. the 9000/14500 GCVWR of the 2007 Lariat (18" wheels). The 3.31 is much better for cruising and passing on the hwy and the truck doesn't run out of breath so quickly. We use the bed on a regular basis so payload was a key factor. 1790 lbs. is plenty for us and this gen truck handles so much better than the previous gen. The 6 spd with the 5.0 is also a game changer.
