2600 Mile Trip Finishes With a Check Engine Light EcoBoost

I have had nothing but good things to say about the truck so far except for the gas mileage issue which seems to be pretty common. It is a truck and if I wanted mileage I would have bought Prius. No on to the issue. Truck just hit 20k miles on this road trip from Los Angeles to Atlanta. Ran about 15 mpg with 295/60/20's and about 500 pounds in the bed going 75-80 with cruise control on. I noticed the issue this after when I went to get into the gas and the turbo hesitated for about 5-8 secs then shuttered and kicked in. Drove another 400 miles with no issues and put it to the floor a few times to try to re create with no luck. Got about 3 miles from the house LUCKILY! Put my foot to the floor and nothing!!! Let off after about 7 or 8 seconds once I realized what was happening! Slowly accelerated and things sounded ok. Gave it a kick again and this time same issue. Let off the gas right away and it started shuddering pretty bad and then came the check engine light. Babied it the next mile home and parked it. Going to the dealer when they open. Any suggestions or anything like this? Read up on the forums and have seen a lot on the Overheat and towing issues but nothing like this. Let me know what you guys think and I will let you know what the dealer says.

I hope the dealer doesn't give you crap for your CAI. Did you tune for that?

So this only happens (shuddering) when giving it what-for, right?

No I didn't tune for it and if my stock AI wasn't in a box on the way to ga in a moving truck from CA I would have put the stocker back in. I only had the issue last night when have it hell but CEL was on again this morning and I babied it to the dealer. Just read a couple other posts on the Eco's doing the same thing in the rain and yesterday I drove in and out of the rain for about 3 to 4 hours. Seems to be something with water getting in the intake box and also around the turbos. Hopefully I hear from the dealer soon.

Update One from the dealer. Also had them checking into my transmission because when I come to a stop the trans feels like it's still down shifting or at times lurking forward at a stop. Said there was a service bulletin calling for a tranny rebuild! So they are going to do that but still nothing on the turbo lag.

Surely they said (or at least meant) 'reflash' and not rebuild.

My wife and I just test drove a brand new Eco FX4 that had this exact issue on the test drive! We took it back and said give us the 5.0. The dealer didn't have a chance to look at it before we left so I don't know the cause of it.

I was a little off on terms. It was a tranny overhaul. So not a rebuild but still a TSB for an OH is a little scary.

End of the day dealer update.
After I picked up the loaner got the update from the service tech.

-Tranny overhaul done and being put back together
-TSB 12-6-4 done on the turbo which is the add air deflector and replacing the left back catalytic converter assembly
-Turbos are still misfiring and will road test again tomorrow after the tranny is put back together

They're not all bad. Plenty of guys on here with no issues and they are selling like crazy. But talked to a Sales Rep today and he told me they are telling people to buy the ECO if they want the towing or the extra get up and go not for the mileage. Was interesting to hear that from a salesman.

Yeah, toMAYto/toMAHto there. One seems as scary as the other, and since the same tranny is used for multiple power plants, this is quite scary! Did you happen to get the TSB # on the overhaul? Calling my dealer ASAP!

I'm guessing the reverse will happen when you get worked from a stop light or towing up a hill from a EB

Put about 3 truck lengths on a 5.0L today from a dig. we were both in a industrial area, no people around

Odd. The opposite has been true for me and the majority of the folks on YouTube.

Congrats though!
