NFC Tags

I searched, but couldn't find anything.

I'm looking for a good place to put an NFC tag in my 2010 F150. NFC (Near Field Communication) is a small sticker that you use with your NFC enabled smart phone. The tags can be programmed to do anything you want. You just tap the back of your phone to the tag and it will automatically enable whatever you have programmed to it. For my truck I have it setup to turn Bluetooth on, disable WiFi and turn the media volume up. I just need a good spot to place the tag. Has anyone done this or know a good spot?

Do you have a cell phone mount in the truck? That would be a great spot.

I have one coming soon. That may be the best place to put it.

On my old phone I was running an app called Tasker. It basically does the same, launches or does what you program it to do once say inserted into a car dock or USB, etc. But it never worked like it should. The Bluetooth would not toggle or something else would cause a problem. The NFC tags are working much better.

What phone do you have and are you rooted? Tasker has worked great on my Motorola Atrix II and my HTC One X. I just leave my Bluetooth on at all times though. My intern at work uses NFC in his Hyundai (tried to get him to buy a Focus) since it doesn't have Sync.

My old phone was a Moto Atrix. First one. It was rooted and running CM7 and then CM9. I now also have an HTC One X. I haven't rooted it yet. But its an awesome phone! I love the screen. I try to turn Bluetooth off when I'm not using it to save battery, but I've never left it on to see how my battery does anyway.

I had Tasker running on my Atrix and had a car dock for it. I have a car dock ordered for my HTC One X. Do you have a car dock for your X? Where do you have it and did you run the cables any where? I would like to route the cables so they're not seen.

I thought about mounting it with the windshield cup like I had the Atrix above the dash and running a Micro to Mini USB cable through a hole I would make through the dash mat to the back of the headunit. It would be the same concept like the external hard drive mod in the glove compartment, which I've already done but don't use. The car dock would get power from the headunit but I don't know if it would get enough compared to the 12v outlet.

I don't have a dock yet for my One X. When I had the Atrix II I had Motorola's 1st party car dock, but never did anything special with the cable. What dock did you order for the One X? I've been looking into a mount for my Tablet since I have a GREAT offline GPS app for it, just need a good car adapter for it.

As far as cable routing, I found the phone easiest to use when the suction cup was up near the rear-view mirror. I was planning on getting the USB2 cable from Ford and routing a USB cable from the dock up to the headliner and down to the A-pillar and getting it fished to the center.

My Droid Razr Maxx has a program by Motorola called "Smart Services". Basically it will do tasks (effects) based on triggers (causes). Very simple to use, and works great with the factory car dock. I love the geo-fencing abilities of the android OS. This is all without a rooted phone.

I ordered the iBolt dock for my One X. When I had my Atrix dock I had it mouted on the windshield, but it was more towards the dash than the mirror. It probably sat a few inches above the dash to the left of the dash mat. I listen to a lot of podcasts. Some are video podcasts. Plus GPS is a lot easier to see with a dock. I also had a cool app that used the phone's camera to detect on coming traffic and cars ahead of you. If you got to close it would alarm you of it. I can't think of the name of it, but I'll find it in my Play Store account.

The headliner routing is a good idea. I wonder if I can get in through the windshield vents. Just looking to get away without drilling into anything.

What tablet do you have. I know they make a few mounts for them.

Thanks for the link to the app.

I have the original ASUS Transformer. I'm rather fond of it, but I need to find a charger that can charge the battery from the 12V outlet while it's powered on. USB chargers' 5 Volts isn't enough.

The USB charging through the head unit has me worried too. I don't know if it'll be enough to charge and play video podcasts.

The NFC is a cool device. My Blackberry doesn't use it... but Bluetooth will connect automatic in any case if you have it set up properly and turn off transmit when not in range with matched device. After I get into the truck, I just talk to my truck (SYNC) and it will tun on the media and etc.. when i need to. Love that!

What kind of phones have NFC capability these days? I can see a lot of other cool applicatios for that!

Mostly Android. The newer models have it built in. My HTC One X has it and the Samsung G2 and 3 both have it. The iPhone doesn't, but the iPhone 5 may when it comes out.

I finally got my car dock installed. I routed the cable through the dash vent to the back of the head unit. Its charging through USB. We'll see how well that works. I also installed the NFC tag on the dock itself. I have an NFC app that has a switching option meaning you can set it to do something when you place it there and when you take it off it does the opposite. On mine I have the tag setup to toggle Bluetooth, turn WiFi off, turn media volume up, disable auto brightness, and turn brightness all the way up. When I take it off it will do the opposite and turn Bluetooth off, WiFi on, etc.

Mr Evil. Make sure you get the latest update for your One X. The car dock app is updated to allow third party music apps. Its the 4.0.4 Android update. The car dock app also has the option to connect to a Bluetooth source automatically, in our case Sync.
