Slip Bump
Slip Bump
When I bought my truck used last month (2009 FX4 157"), I could feel the slip bump on the test drive. I loved the truck otherwise, and decided to buy it anyway since it had 43k miles and was still under power train warranty. After getting the truck home, I wondered if it wasn't stupid idea to purchase a truck with a known issue, especially after reading that some people continue to have the problem after the TSB is performed. I bought it at a Chevy dealership, or I would have made them fix the bump before purchasing.
I'm happy to say that I just took my truck in to the Ford dealer this morning, and the slip bump is fixed! There is a new TSB, 12-7-13, that superseded at least two other slip bump TSBs (actually took my truck in last Friday to have the work done, which is when they discovered the new TSB and had to order the parts for it).
Obviously it's too soon to tell if this fixed the problem long term, but so far the slip bump is non existent. Just wanted to let people know of the new TSB in case anybody is still having this issue (absolutely no cost under warranty).
Side note: The customer service I received from the Napa Ford service department far exceeded my expectations, especially since I didn't buy my truck there, and it was only in for warranty work. Sad that good service seems to be the exception now rather than the rule, but it sure makes things nicer when you feel like you've been taken care of.
Have a good weekend.

I'm glad to hear that your bump issue is apparently fixed!
Just to confirm, you said the number for that TSB is 12-7-13, correct? If so, I can't find any info on it at all. Maybe there was a typo?
Also, do you happen to know what parts they had to order/install to fix the problem?

I've put a couple hundred miles on the truck since Friday, and not even a hint of slip bump to this point.
Yes, they said 12-7-13 supersedes 10-22-6 which supersedes 9-25-5. They said 12-7-13 is brand new, and in fact when they ordered the kit, Ford didn't even have a price for it yet. I realize that no matter my good experience there, it is still a dealer and could have been blowing smoke, but I'm not sure what the motivation would be for lying about it (other than if they ordered the wrong parts the first time around and were just buying time while they "ordered" the new kit). Here's what the receipt said:
"Completed tsb 12-7-13, index marked slip yoke and drive shaft as well as flange and pinion. Removed and discarded center slip yoke boot clamp. Cleaned old grease from splines on slip yoke only. Loosened the center bearing bolts and slided center bearing fully rearward in slotted mounting holes due to vehicle being a 4x4 and torqued down to 35 lb-ft. Applied even coat of grease from kit to internal splines of slip yoke. Reinstalled driveshaft and new clamp. Test drove and checked ok at this time, was unable to feel any bump/shudder on slow speed accel at this time.
9L3Z 4W602 A Kit-Drive Shaf"
Sounds similar to the other TSBs, so maybe there is a slightly different part or different grease they are using, but whatever the case, it seems to have worked so far. Just wanted to share the info since there are probably a lot of 2009s (and probably 2010s) that are coming close to going over 60k miles, and this completely changed the driving experience in that truck. I can't believe the previous owner just drove it around like that and didn't bother to get it fixed under warranty.
