Thinking about buying
Thinking about buying
Ok, first, the key word is THINKING haha. Second, this isn't going to happen for about a year, I'm just bored and want to explore my options and think everything through before the time comes.
So right now i have a 97 4.6 4x4 ext. cab with 200k that i absolutely love. But shes getting old and tired, and once i graduate and start working next year i am going to need a new DD. My first thought is something fun like a mustang with a v6 or maybe even a focus and just keep the truck ( the car will be brand new). but in all honesty the truck doesn't have enough power for what i do in my free time (haul cars/ tractors/ etc.) aannd one of my buddies wants to buy it next year to be a play/ woods/ moving truck. If This happens then i May buy another buddies 99 5.4 and do the car thing too.
Anyway the reason i am here, My third thought was sell ol Betsy to friend number one and take the money as a down payment on a new truck and just not get the car. This also means only one insurance and one licence and less maintenance.
If i go and buy a new truck im getting what i want, 4x4, nice interior, tow package, etc. I've gone online and built the trucks a couple of times and i pretty much know what i want but im torn on what motor i should go with.
so, how do you guys like your trucks? can anyone post real world mileage's (not the computer read outs) and what motor you have? I know the smart move is probably the ecoboost, but i wouldn't mind having that big ol 6.2 in the truck.
short version:
Im looking at a new f150 and im curious about what options you like/ wish you didnt have, as well as your thoughts on the motors and mileages your seeing.
Thanks for the input guys!

2012 Plat/ 5L, which i like better then the 5.4
Not getting the mileage (17.3) i got in my 2010 5.4L (19.4) yet
Only have 3k on it and haven't towed anything yet.
It does ride better and i love the electric steering in the 2012.
Glad i ordered navigation with it this time

For me FX4 with the Lux pkg was perfect. I also checked off the tailgate step, bed extender and trailer brake controller on the order form. This truck has all the Luxerys of a Benz and most capabilities of any 1/2 ton truck. Plus it hauls ***, best of both worlds (truck utility, car speed). It depends on where you live for MPG. If you're in CA expect low teens city and upper teens hwy. Folks midwest and eastern don't have the strict Ca fuel requirements and have seen 1-2 mpg better than me. (16 city/ 20 hwy)
I have the EB (details in the sig). 18.9 mpg life of the truck (10.6k miles). I bought the EB because mines a pavement pounder and I wanted to have the best combo of MPG and Power. I have the XLT with pretty much everything except the offroad and back-up cam (neither needed). Love the 6.5' bed SCREW, something to consider if you are going to work it all. The Lariat's, FX's, Plat's are all nice and have pretty sweet interiors, but they all come with a little steeper price as well. That being said, this will most likely be my last XLT F-150. I am going to either go to a Lariat or KR next, or jump to a 250 in a couple years. Happy shopping, and you are better off with one vehicle. So get a nice rig!
get the 5.0 if you dont need the 6.2 and get an XLT Chrome package or an FX2/4 package truck whichever strikes your fancy. I think its worth spending the money and getting the S'Crew as well I love having the extra room. If I had money to blow I would have the truck first, the one I have now and I would be waiting to order a 2013 ford fusion. Love that car now with the new style!
Thanks for the replies so far, i appreciate the input.
When the time comes, and i do get the truck, the primary use will be as a pavement pounder back and forth to work with a commute of no more than 45 minutes (if things work right closer to 20) so i am kind of leaning towards the ecoboost for that. However, when not in DD mode the truck will see some off road time as a hunting/ farming rig, pulling a 20 foot car hauler with the possibility of a 7k lb or 9k lb tractor, pulling hay wagons, and boat duty. This is why i'm thinking 6.2. Not to mention having 3.73's with a locker would come in handy from time to time. I have this truck now and the poor girl is under powered (and occasionally illegal do to weight restrictions with the 4.6) and i want to avoid that as best i can with the new truck. i don't need a 250 i just need the best combo 150 that i can have for what i need.
Oh and as for style of truck i am leaning towards the golden bronze lariat two tone. It has the grill i want and already has most of the stuff on it i want for right around 45k. so hopefully when the time comes i can get some good incentives from the dealer. But again that is a ways off.
I guess a good question is what are the tow ratings of the different motors? I know the ecoboost comes with 3.31 gears and i'm not to wild about that for trying to lug heavy loads when i need low end grunt.

Oh yea, i am leaning towards the screw and 6.5 bed. I know being so young (22) it may be stupid to be considering a lariat and what not but in all honesty if i get this truck ( and it isnt a turd) i will more than likely own it for ten plus years and i dont want to get stuck with a truck that isn't exactly what i want for that long.
Really? any idea what package/ setup to get those gears? whenever i build the truck the lowest gears it lets me select are 3.55s with the open diff. But if i could do 3.73's or even 4.10's...... hmmm
I apologize, i didnt realize you were looking for an open diff. You have to have a locking diff for the 3.73 and the 4.10. Also, the 6.2 is available in the lariat, and for 2013 you can get it in the Fx4 and the XLT as well.
Sorry i misspoke. The only ones i could get online were the 3.55 open diff. (in lariat) I want 3.73 or 4.10 LS or locker. I did just build an fx4 with the ecoboost and 4.10s. the only things i wish i could add are the two tone paint and the lariat grill. But... for cheaper than the lariat... i could learn to live with the fx4 grill....
