EcoBoost Dipstick Rant

Could Ford have made it any harder to check the oil on the EB. I am 6'2" and can pretty easily reach the dipstick, but have to wonder how anyone under 5'9" reaches it. The thing I really hate is trying to find the receptacle for the dipstick without using a trouble light or a flashlight. I am thinking about trying to paint the dipstick tube with some dayglo orange. It would not be easy to do it, but should be doable.

I couldn't agree more with you. I'm 6'1" and have a hard enough time with it. I don't plan to do much under the hood, but that a normal person should be able to easily check the oil. Oh well, if that is the worst thing about my truck, I guess I can live with it.

I am glad someone else brought it up. I always check my oil, but not now. I am vertically challenged at about 5,5 and cant even see it. At least with my 5.4 I could get to it with some extra effort, but the only way now is to climb on top of the tire and at my age thats a little risky. Somebody mentioned the intercooler opening as a footrest, but I am not sure how much wieght that will support without bending - not to mention scrapping up the finish.. and no I didnt think of this during my test out, but probably wouldnt have stopped my from buying. Any good ideas would be greatly appreciated, no short jokes though!!

I find the same relative difficulty with my 5.0L - gone are the days when you could almost climb into the engine bay of most trucks and walk around a bit!...

I'm 5'-5" and have to climb up in the front bumper area. Basically sitting on my radiator while checking the oil. I just make sure not to bend cooling fins with my shoes. I tried a stool, but can't get over the dipstick hole to put it back in. I don't change my oil so I'm only fooling around in there once every few months.

X2
The diptstick is in the same location on the 3.7, 5.0 and the 3.5. Not sure about the dipstick location on the 6.2?
I'm just under 6' tall and I use a 2' step ladder when I check my oil.

Coming off a previous gen 5.4 F150 with a lift on 35's, doesn't seem too bad to me. just gotta get used to standing on the tire or something to step on to. Throw a grille guard on and you'll have a permanent and sturdy step!

It is an inconvenience. I'm 5'9" and have to use a step ladder.

Glad I'm 6'4"......

I wonder what Ford's thought process is on items like this??? It's one of those things that just leaves you scratching your head....

Having no short step ladder at hand, I just get out the same ol' 5-gallon bucket that I use (inverted, of course) to stand on when I clean the windshield!

LOL, I'm 6' 7" and can still complain about the dipstick. With nothing more than a 2.5" level its a "tip-toes" event.

The motor is mounted as low as feasible to keep the CG lower. For a vehicle as tall as an F-150 it means the dipstick will be low in the engine compartment. The other alternative would be to make it stupid long and route it up high. That would lead to more bends and chance for it to buckle when you're pushing it back in the hole.

I'm 5'7" and just stand on the inside of the bumper. Underneath the plastic cover is a big bunch of metal made to absorb the impact of a front end collision. Compared to this my 160# ain't nothing.

Thanks for the insight Wook, makes sense now that I think about it.
