USB broadband

So I've been reading, if I'm right... I buy a USB broadband modem, and I have wifi no matter where I'm at... It doesn't work on 3G or anything, correct? And if so, does anybody recommend a particular one?... Thanks for any help

I fail to see how this is relevant to an F-150. Your question is best suited for an AT&T or Verizon wireless store.

I'm sure the Verizon lady will tell me how well it works in new ford trucks

It is relevant to Fords, since you can use it with Sync.

My understanding is this:

1) You buy a USB broadband modem that will use 3G cellular service
2) You pay the fee for the modem (around $60/month I think) through AT&T, Verizon, etc.
3) Plug into the USB Sync port
4) You have a WiFi hot spot in your truck that can be used by multiple devices.

Pretty slick. I did not know that.

Though it's probably cheaper overall to pay for tethering on a smartphone, if you have one that is capable.

IF you have a smartphone, AND you have one that supports being used as a WiFi hotspot, AND the phone is always with the truck, AND you don't want the flexibility of having a separate modem.

But, I thought the cost of adding tethering to your phone package was about the same as the cost for broadband modem access.

Of course, I don't have a truck that supports it, nor do I have a modem, nor do I plan on having one any time soon.

If you're running Droid, try FoxFi with your regular data plan. It's a freebie tethering program -- it KICKS BUTT.

You have to jail brake your phone, then there are some apps you can install.

highly recomend PDA net, along with Foxfi.. great free product. cant use with the sync in my 09. but its great in setting up and a wifi hot spot with a couple others in the truck so they have 4g wifi.. its even wpa2 supported for the best security.

you could go with a dongle however you might also already have data plan on your cell.

I actually prefer FoxFi over PDAnet from JF. I used PDAnet a LONG time ago (WinMo, even) and it was great.... but, FoxFi, IMO, is an easier to use product.

any smartphone will support tethering. its about an extra 20 dollars a month depending on your carrier. if you have verizon or sprint your internet will drop every time you receive a call(att you can multitask). If you buy a mobile hot spot its like 50 dollars a month and you get 5GB of data(again depending on your carrier)

you can jailbreak your phone and get it for free, or you can pay for it each month and your carrier will enable that feature on your phone.

you have to buy a mobile hotspot(the usb only works on one device). It will work anywhere your mobile provider gets data services. you said you have verizon so check this out. Verizonwireless.com/coverage
