Low speed clicking (with slight right turn)

I have what I think might be a problem with my 2012 F150 Screw Ecoboost. My wife mentioned she heard a clicking sound when I pulled up to the house tonight.

My first impression by her description was a rock in the tire.

I took it out for a drive again tonight to try to get it to do it again. At first I couldn't reproduce it, but after about a half mile of low speed driving in our neighborhood with the windows down I could hear it. It only seems to happen when the stearing wheel is turned just slightly to the right when going around a corner. Nothing to the left, and I can make the clicking go away with steering wheel movement. There are several S bends on the way up to our house and it only does it when turning to the right (just a slight right, not a hard right), never once to the left.

It does sound like a rock in the tire, but this is obviously not the problem.

Truck only has 1300 miles so it will be going in to get it checked out.

Anyone have an idea of what I might expect to hear?

Thanks

Sounds like a bad CV joint to me (assuming 4wd), but I don't see how with only 1300 miles on it.

Yes, it is 4WD. I don't think any of the other specs probably matter but it has 3.55 gears and is the 6.5' bed. Love the truck otherwise. Hopefully I can reproduce it at the dealer for an easy fix.

My '04 had a CV issue and it was doing the same thing. Warranty *should* cover it.

Clicking was easily reproduced for the dealer today with a simple slow drive through the dealer lot, they didn't offer a possible diagnosis, but it is going in tomorrow morning for service. Not worried about it getting fixed, just curious the possible reasons for such a clicking sound. Seems wierd to me if it is a CV issue that it would only be a problem at very low speed and be completely gone otherwise.

We'll find out tomorrow...

Thanks to those that replied. Looks like it is not going to be the CV joint. Basically they have no idea what is causing the sound. Thought it was the rim so they rotated the tires to see if the sound followed, it didn't.

Dealer is going to contact the higher ups (at least that was what I was told) to see if they have ideas. They don't want to just start replacing parts without a better idea of the problem. For now, I guess I agree, don't want them tearing into a 40K dollar truck without good cause. The tech at the local dealer thinks it might be the hub. Seems wierd to be the hub and only make the sound with low speed turns and nothing else.

Once good thing, dealer can reproduce it, so I'm not too crazy.

I would be surprised if it were a CV joint since they are not turning when in 2wd, so there would be no movement to make them click. Other possibility is hub is bad. Shouldn't be at that mileage, but stuff happens. Also wonder if it might be something with the electric steering. Something very new to the F150.

Thanks for your theory kingfish51. The dealers leading theory is a hub problem, but they didn't want to replace without investigating further. So far it has not caused a drivability issue, but I am kind of holding my breath to see if something happens while I wait for a decision.

It continunes to be interesing to me that it could be a hub problem or even CV joint, but not cause the clicking sound at all speeds and driving straight. I wonder why only low speed and when turning wheel off center (by the way, despite what my post says above, it causes the noise with both slight right and left turns, I only noticed it with right turns at first)

Should know more soon.

I am having the exact same issue with my 2011 F150 super crew 5.0. The dealer said they couldn't hear it or, re-create it.

Dealer replaced left front hub yesterday and the sound seems to be gone. Strange issue with such low miles, but as long as it is fixed, I'm happy.

Hats off to a friendly dealership in Owatonna, MN who treated the customer well, took their time, and got it right.

Glad they got you fixed up. Every time I read this thread title, this is what goes through my mind.

That's funny. I can proudly say it was NOT the turn signal. The dealer did say my blinker fluid level was low and topped it off.
