5.4L road trip gas milage
5.4L road trip gas milage
Florida to NY and back, the trip up started out very well and ended up with a 19.4mpg for the whole trip north. I calculated it myself and got 19.0mpg. Side note, everytime i calculate mpg and compare it to my lie o meter the difference is always different..
Anyway the trip north was real good. loaded about 1000 pounds of stuff in the truck in NY and came back and couldnt get better than 18.6. Once i hit georgia i couldnt stand the drive and wicked it up to 80-85 and it plunged down to 16.3mpg. Before this i would travel from 65-80mph. mostly 70-75 but the extremes came in as i would slowly increase speed coming into a hill where i would allow the hill to absorb some speed.
The truck is a 2009 FX4 super crew 6.5 ft bed with the 3.73s and a 5.4l auto. Gas milage is truely all in the right foot.

That's purdy decent fer a turd 5.4 !!
Did a similar trip back in February and got near identical mileage. I found anything over 70 mph really hurt and keeping it between 65-68 was excellent. Had a pile of plastic bins with clothes and sporting gear stacked to the same level as the roof of the cab and a mountain bike on a hitch mount so I wasn`t very aero friendly. 2 adults + 2 kids as well. I was tuned with 87 perf/tow from 5star but really wished I'd put the 91 octane tune in as it gets about 10-15% better mileage on the highway. It would be interesting to compare this trip during the summer months.
I tucked in behind some rigs a couple of times and caught a draft, hit the lie meter and the MPG would shoot up to 22-23mpg (US mpg)!!
As much as I love driving my friends eco's and 5.0's which are awesome, I have no complaints so far with my turd 5.4
5.4, 3.55, CC, 32" silent armors, 5.5' bed.

13-14 MPG in town....15 MPG on the interstate average speed 80-85
Once I stayed between 70-75 and achieved 18 MPG I will try 65 next trip to see if MPG improves
What tires do you run on your F-150?

Good to see some other 5.4s turning out good mileage. The best I have averaged is 20.5 on a trip back home to my parents place. This was before I swapped the tires out though. I took all country roads and didnt get above 60. As you said gas mileage is all in your right foot.
