drive line slack

How tight are the gears in the rearend, transmission supposed to be. I could push on the back of my truck. It would move forward about 2 inches before gears lock up, tires not moving, in park. I also get a take off clunk. Like gears are loose. Hard to explain.

My 2010 F150 has the slopiest drive train of any vehicle I've ever own period. We have a 2003 Accord with 107,000 miles on it and it's way tighter. My last 08 F150 was tighter. So was my 06 Frontier. I could go on and on but you get the point. I'm really dissapointed in Ford on there driveline in the 09-12 F150's. Thing is I really don't have a clue why there like they are. Is it a combination of frame, suspension, tranny and gears? Pi$$ poor engineering. What's really disappointing is that I really love this truck. I just hate the driveline.

Do either of you also have the clunk when starting from a stop and hard shifts into second? I talked to the dealer about it and they said it's a symptom of the 6 speed transmission on my 2010 Lariat 5.4L. Nothing can be done about it.

yea, take off clunk. Hard shifts into second from day one. Had reflash done on first service. Some times when coasting then you lightly apply gas I get a wind up then hard engage in transmission. Like reeving engine in neutrel and shifting into gear. I only have 18,000 miles on truck. My 2000 model was way better.

My 2011 FX4 5.0 does the same thing, it feels like the transmission is falling out my truck when it shifts into 2nd. I'm also on my second Electronic Steering rack in this truck

Its not every 2010. I have the 4.6 3v 4x4 and have the symptoms as described above. I got the re-flash and things seemed better for a couple of days. My dad has a 2010 5.4 4x4 and his shifts are a smooth as silk. Both trucks are single piece drive shaft. There was a member on here that got a programmer and erased the learning data from the TCM and follows the relearning steps in a TSB exactly as they where described and solved his issue. My belief this is a software problem, the transmissions themselves are fine.

For those of you (including me) who got your trans re-flashed at the dealer I can almost say for certain the tech didnt run through the relearn program as described. Its a lot of steps.

The solution (for me at least) required spending some $$$ but getting custom tunes fixed all of the quirks with the 6 speed. It shifts incredible now. MY experience so far with custom tuning has been great, most (if not all) of my complaints have been fixed.

I had my truck "reflashed" by the dealer 2 or 3 times, I can't remember now. Seemed to run better for a day or two then back to it's bad habits.

I have a 5.5 SCREW - so single piece drive shaft FYI.

I have the "bump" at a stop. When I come to a stop and sit there, about 5 secs latter it feels like someone bumped the rear of the truck. then when I take off I get a small bump/thud feeling. Don't have the hard 1-2 shift on take off.
