Should I get the Ecoboost for occasional towing?
So I have been looking at the new Ecoboost. My 06 5.4 got average of 13 mpg when not towing. The Family and I have decided to get a travel trailer. I need another pickup and really like the new F150. I just dont know if I would be better off with the eco or the V8? Like I said occasional towing in the summer and mostly city driving the rest of the time. Looking for the best mpg with my driving. Not a lead foot either

W/ that weight + what you will add between luggages and passengers i'd probably sway towards the eco w/ the max tow package or the 6.2

Ours will be used as a tow vehicle, so weekends during the summer. It will also be a daily driver. We did get the HD payload and max tow package.

I would get the EB, better mpgs than the 5.0. Better for towing when you do. That 26' 6200lbs might be 7200lb if thats the dry weight. EB is better suited for the 7200lbs, torque is lower in the rpm range and will be more enjoyable to drive when towing. Make sure you think it through if your serious about getting a TT. Remember your tongue weight will be around 800-900lbs, so make sure you get a truck that has enough payload capacity. By the time you load the kids and mama in, hitch up your TT you could be at your payload capacity. Some of the F150's have low capacity ratings. If you can swing the maxtow do it. No sense in having a truck that can't handle the load towing even if you only go camping a 1/2 dozen times a year. Check the yellow sticker on the drivers side door for the max cargo rating.
Your location says Spokane so how much will you be driving through the mountains with that trailer? The EB is forced induction so it will not lose near as much power once you start gaining altitude. This is something to keep in mind. With the weight of the trailer you are thinking about the 5.0 could pull it ok at sea level or close to it. It will be panting and wheezing in the mountains. The 6.2 will be better but will still lose quite a bit of power, plus you will have to feed it.
Well the trailer is something we are thinking about. We could go smaller and lighter if it would be more beneficial with mileage. Basically I am trying to get the best mileage when and when not towing. Some of the traveling would be in the mountains.
I'd only get the EB if you can truely be easy on the skinny pedal. The second you get into boost, your MPG will plummet. I can't ever seem to stay out of boost because I don't want to be the guy holding back traffic getting to 40 mph the slowest way possible. The 5.0 will have more than enough to tow your occasional load.
MPG not towing in these vehicles is almost identical so thats not really a factor when choosing engines, and both should net you 2-4mpg better. A 6200lb trailer with kids and 1-2k lbs in gear puts that trailer up over 8 still within range of the 5.0, but honestly get the Eb with max tow and youll be happy.
Not towing the MPG is going to be a wash between them.
