Leak between drive shaft and rear diff

Hello all. I recently purchased a new to me 2010 f150 XLT 4x4. It has 57K on the clock and runs well. Recently while under the truck I noticed that it looked like the rear diff was leaking. There was oil on the bottom of it. I checked the driveway and found just a drop or two on the ground. My first question is should this still be covered under the 6/60K warranty? Second if not what could the problem be. Pics are attached.

Rear pinion seal leaking and I would think the powertrain warranty would cover it.

Exactly and quite bad to be honest.

If you can I would crawl under and check teh level when you get it back. I had teh one in my Expd replaced,a dn teh dealer failed to top it back off. Of course I can't prove it. I will be replacing teh bearings in the very near future.

Not to be the bearer of bad news, but, get used to replacing that seal. My '04 has the same rear end. Over the last 8 years I've replaced that pinion seal 3 times. I've installed 3 seals from 3 different manufacturers, none have lasted more then 2 years or so. Last one I did was in '10 so it should be due sometime this year.

Had mine done with 25k miles. Dealer said it's very rare though which contradicts T-birds comments. Mine was a very slow drip. Maybe one small drip every day or two.

I can only speak to my personal experience. A pinion seal should easily go 70K+, you had your's done at 25K? My first seal let go at about 35K. This isn't going to be the norm for every F150, but what I'm experiencing can't be a one off deal.

How many of you guys that have problems with leaky pinion seals have modded your trucks to possibly change the pinion angle (lift/leveling kits, etc.)?

I've owned many F150's over the years and a leaking rear pinion seal is something each one has had. Any service writer that is saying this is not common is either new to the game or is full of it. I do know dealerships where the folks in service are instructed to never say anything negative about the product and that includes supporting that a certain repair is a common one. It's not like replacing a pinion seal is a big deal or an expensive repair. Just fix it and forget it. But don't be shocked if you have it done again. Tbird69's experience is dead on.

GLC - no mods on my truck. Thinking of removing my rear blocks though and adding firestone helper bags to help keep it level when towing. This will change my pinion angle - same as 2wd if i'm not mistaken?
