Help quick! Might buy new '11 tomorrow, advice please

Hey folks. I detailed my ole girl this week, to prep it for trade in. Its an '06 SCrew XLT 5.4L 4x4 with 53K miles.

Thinking I want to downsize a bit, I first stopped at a Toyota dealer, and looked at a nice used '10 Tacoma 4x4. It is neat (and in my garage right now on overnight test drive), but I think it will be too small for my family needs.

So, I talked to the Ford dealer who I have dealt with for the last several car/truck purchases about a new super cab 4x4 F150. I drove both the ecoboost and 5.0L 2011 SCrew trucks. I must say they both pulled about the same, and the 5.0L did sound awesome. Both seemed to be quicker than my 5.4L. My car fanatic and expert brother says to go for the 5.0L.

So, I am thinking I am in the market for an '11 SCab XLT 4x4 5.0L. The dealer didn't have any Scabs, but printed off several spec sheets of specific available SCabs at other dealers that she can bring in.

Here's the deal they offered: $19K trade value for my truck and $4k of incentives off MSRP of $35,180, so a price of $31,180 + $375 for tow package. That would equate to my truck + $12.5K for the new one.

Is only $4K off MSRP the going rate currently? I tried to wheel and deal, and she said that price was dictated by Ford and no further discount could be had. I told her that was going to be too expensive and that I was taking the tacoma home and would probably end up with it if I couldn't get a better deal. My brother swears he could find such a truck with $10K in savings, (he suggested there is a Law Enforcement and Military discount, which both of which I would qualify, I didn't know to ask her about this). He told me not to buy it unless I get at least $10K off MSRP, and to talk to a dealer that has the truck I want in stock, for a better deal.

Is that even realistic in today's market? What deals are you guys getting on 2011 XLT 4x4's? Also, the spec sheet says this XLT comes with 235/75-17 tires!? That seems tiny, and I don't think I have even seen one with those tiny tires. Heck, that little tacoma has 265/65-17's on it?!

Please help, I would like to know if I should go for this tomorrow, or hold off, and risk a lower trade in appraisal, at a later date. TIA

A good rule of thumb is to figure out the invoice price and deduct the rebates/incentives from there. I like to use carsdirect do look up the invoice price, but there are lots of sites NADA, KBB etc.. that have the numbers. I don't think LE and Mil rebates can be combined, but the dealer can look it up. Don't know if you're a USAA member or not, but their buying service is outstanding. Thru USAA my truck came in at $1400 (after rebates) below invoice. If you're a member, you can log in to your account and it will spit out the MSRP, Invoice and sales price.

he has 4x4 thats plus 2 grand. I dont think 31 is that bad of a deal. People have to remember deals are relative to location and time of year. I got 7k off my 11 , but that was right before teh 12 came out and they were trying to get rid of all of them. Go try and get better than invoice right now on a 12.

Hold off - because you have bad case of new truck fever. Remember my original advice about the real cost of a new truck in your other post. And remember, they're going to make a fortune off of your used truck because it's in such nice shape.

I'd suggest you take a few days to think it over, run the numbers and see what really makes sense.

If you are not a USAA member, look at Overstock.com. They have the exact same Car Buying Service as USAA and you will get a nice price. I saved over $7,000 when I bought through USAA and I am almost positive that Overstock will be comparable.

didnt you say the salesperson was a woman? LOL she's pulling a good one on you.

First she's probably selling the truck for full msrp, that $4k is probably the MANUFACTURE rebate. She's not dropping a penny from msrp on the truck and telling you're getting the best deal possible, pretty slick huh?

Get an x-pin or use my next post.

Invoice - manufactures rebate/incentives = lowest price

now, demand a $75 dollar doc fee. This is all profit for them, it's a hidden fee to make even more money. Normal doc fee is 250-300?-like i said gimmick fee for more profit.

Don't buy any dealer add ons. The dealer would be out of business if they were just giving these away. It's doubtful you can "beat someone at their own game".

Now you need to figure out the price on your trade in. Or you can sell your trade in yourself using craigslist. The dealer low ***** on trade ins because they know people are lazy and don't want to sell their own vehicle for more profit. If you don't like the price don't do the deal. But there's a guarantee you will see your 06 in their used lot going for premium price/profit for them.

Now figure out finanacing-search on this I don't know much about it. You sometimes need to use their ford financing to get some manufacture rebates, but you could always change finance companies one day later. The dealership will tell you to wait 90 days because they get a rebate/bonus themselves for financing you from ford.

You get the best deal when manufacture rebates/incentives are the highest. Every other variable stays the same.

Law Enforecement discounts usually vary depending on dealers. Not sure if Ford has such a program. My dealer did a few $$ under Invoice, then minus all rebates/incentives for me. I've heard some dealers do even better, then some give you a $500.00 off. Good luck and keep us posted. BTW, I have the 5.0 and LOVE IT.

The incentives I took required ford financing which meant a 4.9APR, I could have gotten 1.9 from by credit union but saving 7k off of MSRP saves me more than a lower interest rate.

NOTE YOU CAN NOT change a day later. If you take incentives and they require you to do ford credit you must wait 90 days otherwise you could see a check for the incentives.

I just refinanced after 98 days and was sucessful. but because it was a refinance I could get the super low rate, but still at 3. Saves me 40 bucks a month.

wrong, first payment you can pay off the truck. It used to be 90 days, but when i bought this truck i was told you could at the first payment.

you can get below invoice, 1200 below is pretty much the max you are going to get as that's the hold back number i was seeing when i bought mine.

yes, but 35k msrp vs. 35k msrp....

7k off is ehh depending on the sticker, i got ~8500 off mine last april.

35k sticker = 28k max for an 11 being it's 2012
