Hey guys, new guy here with a few questions for ya! I plan on gettin a new truck soon (just waiting to see what happens in the next month or so with the career I'm going for). And I'm looking extremely hard at the new F150 Ecoboost 4x4. I am currently building a prerunner/toy that will weigh approximately 4k-5k with a 2500k trailer. I'm just curious if the ecoboost will be able to handle that weight pretty comfortably. I will be towing it at the most 5 or so times a year for the major weekends at the dunes and stuff. If I do get a new truck I want to lower it (lifted trucks are like roaches in Vegas) and want to know if a lowered truck can handle that much weight. I don't mind if lowering it isn't possible it's just something I really want to do. Any help or recommendations you guys have for me is much appreciated!

First off lowering a truck is going to seriously kill its towing capabilities unless you get some high speed stuff. Your talking towing 7500lbs and lower it would not be a good idea. Any half ton will 7500lbs fine, the EB will do it better than some because of the torque curve on it. I tow 9500 with mine and no problem.

 

Cool man thanks for the heads up. I'm not worried if lowering it isn't the best idea, it was just something I would have liked to do but not worried about it if I shouldn't. Thanks again.

 

Generally lowering will not work. I am sure you could lower it and add some really stiff shocks, air bags etc, but then you would be out alot more money and probably make the truck ride like crap

 

If I do lower it I was definitely going to get helper bags for the heavy weight I'll be towing. Although it might be a little pricey I have notice going lower with a truck is cheaper then going higher. Depending on the extent of height though. Thanks man!

 

yeah it can be due to the fact that taking material out and adding smaller should cost less than adding more material. Buddy had a jacked up 08 thing sucked gas and towed horribly needless to say he got rid of it. Im not knocking anybody but lowering and jacking up is more of an asethic thing, sure it add height if your off roader, but most do it for looks which is cool ill admit. But usually you get worse mpg and run into problems like replacing suspension much earlier and degrade towing capabilities. Problem with lowering is I dont think you could ever get a solid answer on what a lowered truck could tow. yeah maybe somebodys theorhetical reasoning but I dont know. Towing 7k is a considerable load with a F150 and be careful with lowering and good luck.

 

How low do you want to take it? You could swap out the 4x4 parts for 4x2 and drop it a few inches and not lose capability. You will still be using factory parts that are rated to the full potential of the truck.

 

that is a good idea. Although I think the drop would be small, maybe an inch?

 

I *think* it works out to 2" in the front and 4" in the back. I know there are blocks on the rear axle that can be removed to drop it down some.

 

I want to do a 3-5 drop on it to get the nice clean lowered look. And I don't even know when my project truck will be done so it'll probably be a while until I even tow that weight anyway. And who knows what'll happen by that time. I might not want the project anymore. Lol

 

Air bags are probably your best bet. Then you can dial in the height and also adjust for the load.

 

That's what I'm thinking too. Just waiting out the next few months and hopefully be getting into a new truck.
