4Hi wouldn't work this morning

First blizzard of the year here, had to get to work this morning.
Got out onto the street and thought I would put her in 4x...
Bought her in the summer and don't recall ever having it in 4x,never had the need.
Well when I tried it all I got was grinding,so I pulled over and tried it from a stop,no grinding but no traction either, seemed to be dragging and making traction worse.
Tried this a few times but realized I had to get to work so quit experimenting and got there, roads were not bad enough to need it anyway.
So get out of work try it a few more times and get the same result.
Get back home and decide to try in 4Lo once and suddenly I have 4x again.
Made some funny noises but now it will go in and out of 4Hi and 4Lo smoothly.
Any ideas as to what was going on and whether any damage has occurred?
Past experience with dealerships leads me to believe that if its working now then don't bother taking it in.

Crazy... If its working now I wouldn't take it in, but I would watch it very closely.

Talked to several service reps in the area...actually had it booked in on Monday but since it's working why bother.
I am curious to know just what went on in the T case and what I would find in the oil...
Does anybody have a detailed explanation as to how these newer trucks lock in the front end?

Was the grinding coming from the Transfer Case area or from near the front wheels?

Hard to really tell....
But if I had to pick I would say front wheels.
It also seemed to affect the traction control....as in not allowing any throttle unless I disabled it....
