Rattle noise in 2010 5.4L FX4

So when I take off from a stop a rattle noise comes from the engine in 1st or 2nd gear around 3000 rpm's or so. It only does this right before it changes gears while accelerating. I have tried all different types of gas from different stations and it still makes this noise. The ford mechanic told me over the phone to try sea foam motor treatment and see what happens. A week later it's still making this rattle noise.

Anybody have issues with this or have a good idea of what this could be? I did some research and found that it could be combustion timing issues. Or, for all I know this could be coming from the transmission since it only happens in 1st and 2nd gear. Any thoughts??

Thanks!

I had the same problem with mine, but it was due to my old programmer. If you have one I would try to setting the truck back to stock a few days an see if it goes away, or try putting the highest octane in next time you fill up. If the problem still persist then take it to the dealer hah.

Thanks for the replies. I have already tried the sea foam because the Ford mechanic told me to. Needless to say it didn't work. I will try the highest octane. I can't do that forever though because gas is simply too expensive, as we all know. The manual says regular octane but maybe one tank of premium will do the trick.

If the higher octaine does the trick atleast you have a starting point. Do you know of any pcm updates, there might be a tsb for this.

Good point! I will have to look into it. I am getting deployed tomorrow for a few weeks so it will have to wait though. When I get back I will talk to my Ford dealer. Thanks!!

Well I am still getting the rattle noise. I tried 2 tanks of premium fuel and it didn't help. I am wondering if it may be the transmission making this noise. I am also feeling a little bump after I come to a complete stop. Any suggestions on what this might be? Thanks!

Torque converter, a loose spare tire or defective brake pads.

Is it a rattle or does it sound like marbles under the hood? Rattle = there may be a loose heat shield. Marbles = pre-detonation ping.

Try Chevron, Conoco or Phillips 66 gas for two or three tanks to see if it help's.

It sounds like marbles and I have been using chevron gas for weeks now. Where is the heat shield located? This only happens in 1st and 2nd gear at around 3000 rpms.

You might try three tanks of Phillips 66 or Conoco then. I used Chevron for many years without any problems.

I had to switch to Shell when I moved to AR. There are no Chevron stations in the Little Rock area.

I switched from Shell to Phillips 66 last month in my 2011 5.0 and in my '94 351W. I had serious ping issues in both trucks with the Shell 87 and 93 octanes. The Phillips 66 is ping free. And, my mileage has increased by 1 mpg in combined driving.

I took the truck in today for the sticky slip yoke issue. I might as well have them look into the rattle noise at the same time. They turned me away today because they were swamped. I will be going back on Tuesday to drop the truck off. I'll post their findings on here next week.
