Decceleration issue.

New to the forum and I just bought a 2011 F150 XLT Supercab, 4x4 with the 5.0 liter. The truck has less than 300 miles.
If I am driving slow, like through a parking lot or residential neighborhood and apply the brakes to stop...the engine continues to maintain RPM’s briefly (almost like you have your foot on both the accelerator and brake) the truck then downshifts and RPM’s drop to normal.

Anyone else have this problem?
There is a TSB for the “brake over” feature (THERE MAY BE A LOSS OF POWER, HESITATION, SURGE, OR LACK OF THROTTLE RESPONSE WHILE DRIVING. THE BRAKE OVER ACCELERATOR FEATURE MAY BE ACTIVATING.) but this seems opposite of that problem.

Thanks for any insight.

Not had any problems at all. Mine seems to drive perfectly. I will say though, my brakes take some getting used to. Very sensitive, especially after I drive my 2005.

Is it downshifting? I noticed when towing my boat if I tap the brakes a few times the engine downshifts to second gear which makes the engine rev. I thought something was wrong until I read the board that this is by design. Now I have to watch tapping the brakes multiple times when towing.

That is by design when you use tow/haul mode.

i have a 2009 4.6 3 valve 4x4 and it does the same thing driving in a 25 mph and not having to touch the gas and doing 18 to 20 mph almost seems like the old engines that stuck on fast idle or choke

Riley 94...That is a good description of what it does.

BJP 207...That good to know. (I have less than 300 miles on my truck).

I have the Select Shift transmission, I can bring up the gear indicator by touching the [+] button when the transmission is in drive and it will show all gears 1-6 and highlights the gear I am in.
So I drove around and notice that when the transmission downshifts through the gears as you are coming to a stop, when it get to 3rd it will actually stay in 3rd until the truck is almost stopped then shift into 1st (will skip over 2nd). I think this is might what I am feeling and I probably perfectly normal...
...would other people with the Select Shift mind checking your gear indicator and see if your truck does the same as mine. Thanks

Great forum by the way and I am really liking this truck.

Yes, the 3-1 downshift is normal and keeps a shrugged from happening.

i've noticed on my truck that if i take off with just enough peddle pressure to get the truck going...but not enough to make the truck shift into 2nd gear...and then let off the peddle...the truck will keep rolling along like i have my foot on the gas! but as soon as i hit the brakes, that behaviour ends promptly. something to do with the way the torque converter handles driving around at low speed in 1st without killing the motor????

2011 Platinum 5.0, 10,000 miles. I got my truck in late March, the first few months everything was great, it had no drive-ability issues. In July while cruising the back lot of a dealer looking for a Flex for my wife, I noticed that the truck was cruising at 18-20 mph holding 1,300 - 1,400 RPM with my foot off the pedal! Even when I applied the brake the RPM stayed up until I was almost completely stopped. The RPM's staying up sure, makes entering the garage an interesting adventure!

Recently it developed a new problem; occasionally when approaching a stop sign using light brake pressure the truck will "surge" forward forcing me to increase brake pressure quickly or risk hitting the car in front of me. When it does this I notice the tach jumps from 700 rpm to the 1,300 - 1,400 rpm range.

A couple of days ago I took it to the dealer and had the Tech ride with me in the back lot, after a couple of foot off throttle runs through the back lot I offered to let him drive. He said he didn't need to drive it he could see what it was doing and to drive it into the service bay. He re-flashed the computer and initially it seem better, not fixed but better. Now two days later it is surging at the stops again and will hold even higher speed on the flats.

I wasn't very happy when I was told I have to keep driving it to re-teach the computer. Do I really have to tell the computer that "foot off throttle with brake applied" means slow down and not maintain or speed up?

On the way home from dinner last night, going down a long steep hill, I took my foot off the gas at 60 MPH to see what would happen. To my surprise the RPM'S dropped to 700 , just for kicks I shifted into neutral and the RPM jumped to 1,500 until just before I coasted to a stop. That is some really odd behavior.

I like the truck a lot but this kind of problem is not only annoying it is downright dangerous.

See this TSB...

Tsb 11-8-9

5.0l—engine braking performance during low speed coast down

ISSUE:
Some 2011 F-150 vehicles equipped with a 5.0L engine built at Dearborn Truck Plant (DTP) on or before 7/27/2011 or built at Kansas City Assembly Plant (KCAP) on or before 8/8/2011 may exhibit a concern with less than desired engine braking performance during low speed coast down maneuvers. This concern may be most noticeable in a parking lot environment or in stop and go traffic conditions.

SERVICE PROCEDURE:
Reprogram the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to the latest calibration using IDS release 74.01 and higher. This new calibration is not included in the
VCM 2011.7 DVD. Calibration files may also be
obtained at www.motorcraft.com.

NOTE:
PLEASE ADVISE THE CUSTOMER THAT THIS
VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH AN ADAPTIVE
TRANSMISSION SHIFT STRATEGY WHICH
ALLOWS THE VEHICLE’S COMPUTER TO LEARN
THE TRANSMISSION’S UNIQUE PARAMETERS
AND IMPROVE SHIFT QUALITY. WHEN THE
ADAPTIVE STRATEGY IS RESET, THE
COMPUTER WILL BEGIN A RE-LEARNING
PROCESS. THIS RE-LEARNING PROCESS MAY
RESULT IN FIRMER THAN NORMAL UPSHIFTS
AND DOWNSHIFTS FOR SEVERAL DAYS.

Same here

I actually scared some pedestrians with this behavior of the engine during parking lot maneuvers.

It's some mix of slowing down and tapping the accelerator results in the engine racing for a bit but not much movement.

I'm pretty sure there is some software guy to blame for this!

Angry Decceleration / lurch forward issue

My 2011 F150 has done this twice. The 2nd time I had to stand on the brake to get it to stop. The rear wheels actually spun for a split second before it finally downshifted. The Service dept at the dealer said I had to have been pushing on both the accelerator and the brake simultaneously - which is garbage
As Dangerous as this is they are not willing to take me seriously - probably because an accident caused by this condition would be almost impossible to prove it was the truck's fault. Showing them printed incidents of other people with the exact same issue was fruitless. I am going to make as much noise about this as I can

My '09 had that issue but after 3 trips to the dealer (I was going back for other things, otherwise it would have downright upset me to keep going back for the same thing) they were able to fix it by reprogramming for a third time and removing "driveline slack" (it also fixed a problem with a THUNK when downshifting for a highway pass). It was the 4.6v3 combo.

My '11 and '12 (both Eco) haven't shown the same behavior.
