5L and oil usage...
5L and oil usage...
hey folks,
just wondering if you guys with the new "302" are noticing similar. today i checked the oil on my truck...and noted that the level had dropped to halfway between the full and add mark on the dipstick. i have approximately 3500 miles on the truck and have yet to change the oil.
although no big deal, i can't remember the last time i had to add oil to an engine in between oil changes, so i was a bit surprised. just wondering if others have noticed some oil usage with the new motor! :-)

I'm half way on the mark at 1500, so be happy! My 134,000 mile 5.4 still barely moves on the stick in 4500 miles.
That little short stick is difficult to get a good reading, I first thought I had used a full quart.

No manufacturer considers oil consumption "excessive" unless it's more than a quart in 1000 miles. Some (identical) engines just use more oil than others, just like some (identical) engines get better gas mileage than others.
My old 4.2 has used 1 quart in 6000 miles since I bought it with 55k on it - it now has 140k on it and it's not getting any worse. I would be worried if it DIDN'T use any oil at all, I'd be concerned it's not getting where it needs to go!

I'm just wondering if you allowed the rings to seat properly? I couldn't wait until 10,000 miles for the first oil service. I will most likely perform the rest of my oil changes at 5,000 - 6,000 mile intervals with MC Syn Blend 5W20 and a MC oil filter.

Hey, none of them do if you don't drive them!

Give ya 2 hints.
1 Wait until you have 10,000 miles on the clock and then take it out and drive it like you stole it for about 15 minutes. If that means 80 mph in second gear- let'er rip! You're trying to build heat on the cylinder walls to cut the glazing that's happening. It'll only happen with heat and lots of full throttle which means due to throttle mapping, lots of RPMs.
2 Do not wait on changing the oil the first time out. The engine is having to "plate up" with the additive package in the oil and it doesn't take long for there to be a shortage. You also need to change the first time early as the engine will have loads of debris from the machining process that needs to be removed. It comes out in the oil. Don't expect the oil filter to catch all of it either. The larger the particulate, the faster the filter goes into by-pass which means no filtration is happening. I'd suggest changing at 1500 miles the first time.
