Volant Intake work well with 2010?

I got a Volant intake for Father's day this year, and installed the bad boy in my 2010 Fx2. It wasn't hard to install at all, but I'm wondering if it's working right...

I get the distinctive after-market intake sound at sharp acceleration, but at cruising speeds, the sound all but disappears. It almost has a bogging-down sound as I decelerate. I'll admit this is the first intake I've ever owned on any of my vehicles, but I've had enough friends sup up their rice burners to know that in their vehicles, the sound is a constant and doesn't fade away.

Is this normal? Is the intake sound supposed to disappear once speed is constant? I'll also mention I'm not seeing the expected increase in MPG, either. I was getting an average of 16.9 MPG during the winter, and I expected it to remain consistent during the summer with the A/C on, but it's dropped to 6.3...

Anyone with experience might be able to shed some light on this?
This is the intake:

get a programmer with a custom tune and it will help tremendously. I recommend PHP for the programmer and tune. the sound will be more consistent, mpg will increase along with power. I wouldnt run an intake without a tune or you risk running lean.

had a volant in my '04 with the powercore filter, not a fan. I had the truck tuned by VMP and also had magnaflow exhaust. Thing had real annoying drone and beside making noise I feel like it did absolutely nothing. I dont think intake on the newer trucks is really worth it and I feel that is the sentiment on this site for the 09-10. Hope you figure it out and works for you tho!! It needs a tune tho, the 5.4L has a disposition to run lean (from what ive been told on here).

Thanks for the replies, guys. I had a feeling I'd need to get it tuned. As I mentioned, I got it as a present, and had I ventured to go out and get one myself, I'd have done all the research beforehand. The fact remains I have the intake, now, and that it was a very thoughtful gift from my wife, so I want to make it work, even if it isn't something I'd have jumped on, originally (I'd have gone for a Banks exhaust before an intake, haha).

What are the implications of running lean for too long? I've had this thing in for about 2 months now... Is it just a loss in fuel mileage, or will there be permanent damage? Sorry if that's a stupid question, but as I mentioned, I'm somewhat new to this.

Last question - what's a good tuner? There are so many of them out there, it's hard to know what's good and what's not. I looked into PHP, and they don't have any tuners for 2010 models. I hoping to get something that will be good, but not too expensive, as the intake was already $330.

Check out 5 Star tuning. Very good rep among members. Running lean can do serious damage to the engine. If it is not pinging, I would not be too concerned but I would not get on it hard. until I had it tuned.

Did you disconnect the battery when you installed it? It will reset the ECU and it took about a week for mine to learn the new intake. At first mine did the same thing but after a few days it was way better.

2008 ford 150 larriat. Same intake with power core filter.

Sorry that wont work.....a custom tune will properly address the transfer of the mass air flow senser location.....
