2WD vs. AWD

Ok, I think I have done appropriate searching and didn't really find the answer I was looking for.

For starters I have just come from a Mazdaspeed6 which was all-time AWD so I am familiar with some of this. But here is my question:

On my F150 is there a disadvantage to driving day to day in AWD vs. 2WD? I assume it is a bit different than it was in my sedan or I guess I dont understand why there is a 2WD option since AWD would seem superior?

I have been reading about 4WD vs AWD so I think I am pretty good there, but what am I missing?

Is there a HP loss? Performance not as good? I seem to be reading that its like 99% of the time you should drive in 2wd, go to AWD when its a bit snowy etc and 4WD for more extreme truly off-road type applications. I know I only have 4HI but still, someone please school me!

There is more resistance in AWD vs. 2WD so you could see a slight decrease in MPG when in AWD. 2WD may be better when towing to not put as much strain on the front drivetrain as it is not as stout as the rear stuff.
