I've got a 2010 FX4 and several months ago the front driver door speaker started turning on and off for no reason while I'm driving. It drive's me crazy but I figured I would just put it off until my next servicing. Brought it in today and of course they can't find anything wrong with it. They did order me a new speaker in the hopes that it will take care of the problem. My only question is when the speaker IS working, it sounds fine, wouldn't a speaker going bad have sound problems? Anyone else have speakers that turn on/off for no reason? I hate to have to bring my truck into the shop several times only to find it's the radio and not a speaker.

have the exact same problem... when i turn the radio up i get my sound back.... please let me know what fixes it

 

Your right, sometimes when I play with the volume button it correct's it. I guess I'll see if the new speaker does anything. I just assumed it was a loose speaker wire.

 

Another thing is that Ford has had "issues" with the wires to the driver's door breaking due to flexing inside the bellows conector between the door and the A-piller. Most of the time it is the wires for the power windows that fail, but it could just as easily be a speaker wire.

 

My 2010 did the same thing so I traded it!!

 

My '10 XLT left speaker did the same thing, on and off. I have the std. radio, nothing extra. If you switched to the rear speakers the left side on that did the same thing. So, it wasn't the wiring. Ford dealer replaced the radio and problem is gone! They told me that they replace a radio about one every month on warranty. It the amp. that built in to the radio. Took one day to get a new one for the replacement, takes about one hr.

 

I noticed my 2010 doing it when I had my door open. I thought wireing issues. Hasnt done it again so I guess Ill wait and see. Its bad enough these systems sound like crap now they dont even work right.

 

I just noticed yesterday that the driver's side front speaker in my '11 FX4 is starting to crackle. I guess I'll mention it when I go in for my first oil change.

 

I had the same issue in my 2011 XLT Screw...I replaced the entire wiring harness for the front driver's side door a couple of months ago and the issue hasn't happened again. Ford part # for the wiring harness is BL3Z-14631-B.

 

Happened on my 2010 xlt. Went to the dealer 3 times. Replaced speaker and kept it for day's the other times. Finally traded it in because of that and many many other problems.

 

How involved was the replacement? How long is the cable ?

 

My 2011 fx4 does it too - however when I cut the volume up just a lil bit the driver side speakers play just fine.

 

My 11 FX4 has the crackle on low volume, turn it up and it's gone. It also will cut out at times but usually only on a low volume setting. This is on the drivers door.

 

Is this issue only with the regular radio, or Sony 10-speaker audio system as well?

I have 9,500 miles on my 2011 Lariat, but no issues with the sound system.

The cable is the length of the door and the harness includes all power equipment in that door. Windows, locks, mirrors, keypad, speaker, ect.

1.)Remove the door panel.
2.)Remove the plastic vapor barrier.
3.)Take a photo of wiring layout or make a sketch.
4.)Disconnect and remove existing wiring.
5.)Run new wiring in pass through hole at the front bottom of door.
6.)Route wiring per your photo or diagram and reconnect all power options.
7.)Reconnect harness to terminal outside of door (it'll be helpful to have a second set of hands for this, as the door needs to be held at just the right angle to make this connection.)
8.)Reinstall vapor barrier (a second set of hands is helpful for this as well.)
9.)Reinstall door panel.
10.)Confirm correct operation of all power options.

It took me about 45-60 minutes. Could've gotten it done a little quicker if I had the extra set of hands I referred to above. Also, pay attention to how the main harness connector works when you remove the existing harness. It'll make it easier to install the new one. I'm not making a guarantee on this fixing the problem; but I know it did for me.
