2011 f150
okay so i don't know if i am in the right section or not.
but i am currently driving a 2001 F150 supercrew with the 5.4L i am looking to upgrade to a new one here in the next month or so.
I have been reading alot on the ecoboost and the 5.0, but i am not sure which one would be better for my driving and towing habits.
I currently pull around 5,000-6,000lbs around 100 miles weekly during racing season. April thru September. but next season i am going to go IMCA sanction and will have the ability to travel and am wanting to which will turn my milage to around 400-500 miles weekly or more.
i also go to school during the week 30 miles oneway trip 90% highway
so i am looking for fuel economy but also need a good truck to tow. during the winter time i don't tow much. maybe once a month or so.
which one do yall reconmend for me to look more into for over all fuel economy and towing.. also might be looking for an enclosed trailer to tow my racecar with. which will increase tow weight..
also i carry a 36 gallon transfer tank that most of the time is empty except for when i am towing the racecar, plus i carry extra wheels and tools in the bed of my truck so thats a few more lbs.
suggestions please
Thanks

Everyone has their own idea of what is ideal for them and what works best for them. Unfortunately no one elses is the same as yours
The best thing to do is go drive both. I should be taking delivery of my '11 FX2 w/ the Ecoboost tomorrow if it gets delivered properly today from the factory. I went and drove two identically equipped trucks but one had the 5.0 and one the EB and for me, it was no contest. EB all the way.
They really drive very differently and have different manners based on what you are doing or how and where you are driving. I was very surprised at the difference actually.
Unfortunately everyone's opinion is very subjective as they of course aren't you and cant' answer the question for you. Nothing wrong with taking off to the dealer and taking them both for a spin.

Check out Ford's demo vids with the EB (at the bottom, the red truck) Mind you, they are pitting it against the Tundra 5.7L, and Hemi 5.7L , GM is a non factor. With the exception of GM, the other motors outclass the 5.0L. It may help you put into perspective the EB usable power range, economy when not hammering on it, etc.

For towing mileage 5.0 for unloaded mileage eb. If your going 400 miles weekly 5.0. Since your unloaded is highway there will not be but 1 mpg difference in favor of eb. It might even be more in favor of 5.0 because I am reading the eb needs a bit of warmup time (10 miles or so) to where it reaches maximum efficiency. Both trucks can pull way more than they are rated at. I pulled 11000 lbs and never had to get above 3000 rpm and that was just me seeing how quickly I could get on the interstate without just flooring it. Either engine is a winner you just have to decide which fits your needs most.
Why do you say the 5.0 will get better mileage towing? The 5.0 makes its torque at higher RPM's than the Ecoboost. That would seem to mean the 5.0 would use more fuel to tow.
Anybody got numbers to back this up?

one guy on here got 7.6 mpg IIRC towing his trailer (he has 33's iirc) w/ his eb.
i think either will do fine, 4-5k isn't much weight. i chose the 5.0 and will be towing 6k+ once my LC is done.
go test drive both. there are tons of threads on the debate of which is better and it's truly personal preference. i wouldn't go off mileage alone for a motor as they seem to be getting similar.

Sounds good to me, I got an awesome deal on my leftover 08 XL Supercrew... living within my means and not needing the newest out there.
