Does anyone know if there is a TSB out in reference to the crazy downshifting. My new EcoBoost F150 downshifts like it has a mind of its own. I will be driving along and start going down a hill and out of nowhere it will bang a couple of downshifts and the RPM's jump from 1500 to 3500!

Are you using tow/haul mode?

 

x2 I believe in tow mode it downshifts on downhills to use the engine as a braking system.

No I'm not. It would make sense if it were downshifting to maintain my speed going downhill in the tow-haul mode but that is not the issue. I can take my foot of the gas as I'm coasting to a stop light and it downshifts on its own.

 

If the cruise is set, it will do this to help maintain speed going down hill and use engine braking to slow you down. At least, that is how our Flex works (I know, it's a car, but the programming of the trannies are similar). Freaked me out the first couple times it did it. I don't think you have to be in tow/haul mode for it to do this either.

 

It also does this when not in tow/haul mode, or at least it does on my truck, in city driving, unloaded. Just letting off the gas at 30mph, and the truck downshifts.

Does this engine braking system also happen when not in tow/haul mode?

 

I have noticed these rather harsh down shifts as well. I know for a fact that I have felt it from 6 to 5. But I have also felt it lower down. I notice it, but it doesn't bother me, and I don't think that it is a problem.

 

I talked to the local dealer’s service department on the phone today and was told that there is a TSB. There is new flash that takes care of the downshifting problem when NOT in the tow-haul mode. I will take it in next week for the new flash and see what happens.

 

I know you have the ecoboost, but let me know what they tell you. I just had my 2010 in today. They told me that it is a strange downshifting issue. But there was nothing that can be done. The reflashed my PCM and TCM and performed a drive cycle on it. Still doesn't feel right. Actually encouraged me to purchase a tuner/programmer. They said there weren't any TSB's that applied to my truck. So I'll be interested to hear what they tell you.

I've been watching that thread, and will keep my eye on this one. I've got a 2011 5.0, and it seems to shift hard into 1st as I'm coming to a stop. No sound, just a weird lunge right as I'm almost to a complete stop. I've only got 1000 miles on the truck, I've never towed anything, nor am I in tow mode. I've checked out my productivity screen where it shows what gear you are in. As I slow down to a stop, my truck will downshift from 6th gear, 5th, 4th, 3rd, and then to 1st. For the life of me, I can't get my truck to downshift into 2nd. I'm thinking that might explain my situation. Maybe the shift from 3rd down to 1st is giving the extra little bump I'm feeling. And maybe this is by design that it won't downshift to 2nd. Just my 2 cents on what I'm experiencing. No noticeable issues with any of the other gears. Hopefully with more mileage and break in, things will smooth out. Thank goodness for warranties. This is the exact reason I'm holding off for a little while before I do a lift kit.

 

the tsb is only for a 1-2 shift problem and on a certain few vehicles. The shifting that you are describing I believe is normal for this transmission. mine does it with tow/haul on or off. If you find otherwise let us know.

I've got roughly 3,000 miles on my EB (2WD Supercrew 6.5' bed) and it's never once downshifted on a downhill.

Mine does shift gears A LOT around town, but not going downhill maintaining speed like you mentioned.
