Window Tinting
Has anyone got their back window tinted? How dark did you go. Does the tint help with headlight glare on the rearview mirror? Is Llumar/Suntek film a good brand? Can the side windows be tinted at all in NJ? If so, how does that install work and will it last with the windows going up and down? Can the front window at the top be tinted? I am not going to do this myself, but was hoping to get some info before i go around to shops to get prices. Thanks for any help.

IMO, tinting the fronts 20% is perfect to match the back. it is illegal in NJ, even though every does it.
im in Morris county

I put 3% on all windows in my truck recently and I love it. Like NJ, we aren't supposed to have any tint on the driver or passenger windows. At night I can see people's headlights, but there is no glare. I do need to either add some more reverse lights or get brighter ones. I have to roll my passenger window down a little to parallel park at night. If the person that installs your tint is anything above decent it should have no problems lasting with the windows going up and down.

I think CA and NJ have similar tint laws and we can have the top of the windshield tinted down to the AS1 line. I went well beyond the line and haven't had any attention from LEO's in the ~3 years I have had it on there.

Here is the difference in my 5% brow that was done almost 3 years ago and my freshly done 3% on the windows. The 3% looks kinda purple in the pic, but in person it isn't purple at all.

The back windows are 3% over the factory privacy glass so they are a little darker from the inside than the driver/passenger windows.

In NJ, its 5yrs for new cars now. most people, including myself just pay a local gas station to inspect it.

I've been told it can't read any lower than 32%. My question is, I have 20% on front, and 5% rear and brow on my wife's car. Been pulled over, ticketed, and told to waive the ticket just get 35% all around, and then reinspect the vehicle. That right there is the price of the ticket. So, since I was deploying, figured I'd pay the ticket and it would be a one time deal about getting pulled over. Turns out 2 weeks after I deploy, the wife get's another ticket for her tint, cop didn't answer her question about the tint law, and the DMV website says "passenger vehicles are allowed to have as dark as they want in the rear". Since a Mazda 3 has seats in the back, doesn't that make it a passenger vehicle? My buddy called Raleigh PD and they said yes, the rear of a car can be as dark as possible. Fayetteville PD are saying 35% all around.
^^^^ The standard should be set by the State. Looks like North Carolina is 35%.

Typically a car is not classified as a "passenger vehicle" but yet is a vehicle that transports passengers as in a limo, bus, etc.
FWIW, I've never seen where the rear windows on a passenger car can be as dark as the owner wants. In Georgia, the rear of a pick-up truck or SUV can be as dark as the owner wants, but the front windows can't be any darker than 32%.

The definitions of the exempted vehicles can be found here.
Basically, trucks and minivans are exempt from the 35% restriction for all windows behind the driver.
Hope this clarifies things a little.
I had the shop put 20% over my very back window, works great for cutting down the headlight glare from behind without having a super dark window/tint. Rear door windows are still stock, and then I just did 35% for the front door windows. Used this same setup on my last 2 trucks.
