36 Gallon and 26 Gallon tank the same?

Greetings everyone!

Long time lurker, first time poster- I was thinking about buying a new 36 Gallon tank from my dealer and just putting it in my 2011 Platinum EB. I have the pleasure of having a 2011 STX as a company rig with the 36 Gallon tank. I got under both trucks today to see if I can see the difference between the 26 and 36 gallon tanks. Am I missing something?? These two tanks look, feel measure the same! I can't see how the bigger tank can hold 10 more gallons- They look exactly the same!

If someone could look at both sizes and compare and let me know what I am not seeing... Thanks.
BTW, swapping out a 26 for a 36 looks pretty straight foward. Just need to confirm getting the computer reprogrammed for the new capacity-

I'm curious as well. If it just a matter of a bolt up and a re-program, it may just be worth it.

It may not work because of the different fuel pump inside the tank. Ford is working on a new tank (for 2012). Maybe you should wait for the 2012 to come out with the new tank before you try it?

This is what a dealer had to say about it:
"I looked it up and yes the EB runs different fuel pressure (61-73 psi) so it will have a different pump and will likely mean that you can't just drop in a 36 gallon tank and have it work."

I would think that the top plate would be the same on both models, if it is you could always just pull the pump out of your tank and put it in the new one. As you said though having it reprogrammed would be the key, they should be able to do it but you would have to call a dealer and find out.

My 36 runs all the way to the rear axle and is level with the bottom of the frame etc. Maybe the STX has a 26 also?

Some group that Pickuptrucks.com was following was doing a cross country ride in a fiesta and ecoboost f150. the f150 held 36 gallons. I think theres some confusion on the tanks in these EBs

You might be right!

My Company STX has the 36 Gal tank for sure and looks "exactly" like the 26 Gal under my Platinum! The tank in both follow the bottom of the frame and both start at the rear axle and are about 72 inches long.

Is there a 10 Gal tank hiding somewhere?

Not in my Platinum. If I try to put more than 26 gallons in my truck I will end up with gas on my shoes. That's all she will take.

Now, there might be something programed/built into the truck to stop too much gas from being put into the tank. Most EFI vehicles use the empty space at the top of the tank as a pressure accumulator of sorts. The EB might need the extra space for this reason.

if u had read the article, the guys got nearly 36 gallons in it by going very slow and basically trickling it in the tank. still a 26 gallon tank and ford has NOT confirmed a 36 gal tank for ecoboost for 2012. just another rumor

Could be like the early jeep YJ's. All came with a 15 gallon tank but they put a longer filler into the tank on some that only let you fill up to 10 gallons. We would just cut the filler neck down and could then put in 15. Just a thought.
