Travel Trailer question????
Travel Trailer question????
I want to buy a 31ft travel trailer with a dry weight of 7210 lbs I own a 2009 supercrew 4x4, 5.4l, 3:55 and 145wb I also have towing package. Is this trailer too heavy considering weight of the trailer and camping gear etc...
It will tow it, but I wouldn't go long distances, or travel in an area with lots of hills. Remember, by the time you load it up, you will probably be closer to 9k lbs.
I towed a travel trailer with a dry weight of ~4500 lbs behind my '05 F150 with the 5.4. It did fine, but I would not have wanted to tow a trailer with an extra 2700 lbs of dry weight.
For that weight, I would go with a 3/4 ton, but that is just my opinion.

Way to big. I tow 7200lbs loaded with a 2010 5.4 3.73 and it's pretty much all I would want to tow. It's not so much the power but the weight of the TT against the truck. With another 1000lbs you could get into trouble pretty easy. And with 3.55 gears you will have a harder time keeping up speed in the hills/mtns. Plus you need to check your payload sticker on the drivers door. I'm guessing you don't have enough payload capacity for your tongue weight, plus your trucks hitch isn't rated high enough for your trailers tongue weight. Which with 8200lbs loaded would idealy be 1066lbs. Figure 1066lbs plus you and passengers + cargo and you more than likely don't have enough payload capacity. Payload capacity on 1/2 tons is their weakest link.
I doubt you have enough payload to support the 1000-1200 pounds of tongue weight. What does your yellow TREAD act sticker show you have available? You'll want to keep the weight of your family, cargo in the bed, and the trailer tongue weight under that number.
First what you need to check is what trailer tow package you have and its weight rating(regular or Max trailer pkg). I also assume that it is a bumper pull(travel trailer) or is it a fifth wheel? If it is a fifth wheel you need to know the pin weight and that will determine if you can legally pull the trailer as it will go directly against the payload rating of the truck. If it is a bumper pull you need to know the tongue weight, as if it is over I believe 800lbs you need to go with a weight distribution hitch(which I would recommend anyways). With the WDH this will pull some of the tongue weight off the hitch to distribute to the axles of the trailer & truck so you need mostly worry about the GVW of the trailer. Look at what the GVW of the trailer and make sure it fits within the trailer tow package weight. As far as the weight and size of the trailer you will not have any issues pulling it as long as you get the hitch/WDH setup properly. I pull a 33 foot, 10500lb GVW trailer with now problems. My 2009 F150 Platinum 4x4 3.73 pulls the trailer like a dream, including going through the Rocky Mountains and interior British Columbia. I hope my 2011 Ecoboost will pull it as good as my 2009 5.4L did. Just my two cents.
