2011 XLT 5.0 mileage update

Today I finally took a trip longer that 20 miles haha....so I thought it would be a good time to do some fuel mileage monitoring. I have a 2011 XLT SuperCrew 5.0 4x4 3.73s, 20's, 4001 miles on the odo when I got home today. I started with a topped off tank of 87 octane and the gas station I use is only about 1/2 a mile from the Interstate I drove today. I drove 180 miles with only 4 of them being non-highway miles. My average speed was 75 mph one way and 80mph returning. The entire highway is up and down with no real flat spots to speak of. Most of the grades are pretty low but there are a couple about a mile long that are steep enough to make it down shift. I used cruise as often as possible.

the results
mpg according to computer: 17.3
mpg according to me and my calculator:16.8
fuel used according to computer: 10.4 gal
fuel used according to the pump: 10.8

I believe that if I was on flat ground with the cruise set at 70 I would see a couple of mpg's gained. I noticed that my avg mpg according to the computer where 18 when I got there and 17.3 when i returned. I reset all of my trip and mileage meters before I left and refilled the tank at the same station, at the same pump, with the nozzle inserted the exact same way.

In my opinion the mpg aren't bad considering my cruising speed and terrain, however, it is a tad disappointing . I believe the other gear ratios should also provide better returns.

Overall I LOVE THIS TRUCK!!!!! I love it everytime I look at it and everytime i drive it. The only thing i dont like is the weak stereo, but that project will be underway soon.

I hope this provides some good real info for the folks out there. I'll update again when i take a trip to the beach in June as it will be about a 1200 mile round trip.

I'm sure you already know this but if we want to get decent mpg's we've got to keep the cruising rpm's at or below 2k. If I were to set cruise control at 75 or 80 I'd be over the 2k and would get 18 mpg, with my V6 w/3.73's.

All in all I'd say you got some decent mpg, considering you were going at a pretty good clip.

I'm pretty satisfied with it. I've read some posts here and there claiming 20,21 mpg with the 5.0 so i pretty much thought i'd raise the bullcrap flag.

With the stock Pirelli's my truck easily got a little over 20 mpg at 65 mph with no AC on. With the larger tires and the AC on I'm getting 18.1 mpg top's. The 3.55 gear's help out too at hwy crusing speed's.

I'll have to go on a little journey at a slower speed on some hopefully more flat ground and see what that produces. My sticker when i bought it only showed 19 for hwy.

I have a 2011 F150 super cab with a 5.0l and 3.55 gears. I drive from Knoxville to Nashville and back often. If I set the Cruise at 69 or 70 I get about 22.5-23mpg round trip. If I set the cruise at 75-77 I get 18.5-19.1. I have done this trip multiple times. One thing I have noticed about city driving is Shell gasoline seems to give me 1 more mpg, but no change on the hwy.

You are getting some decent numbers for a heavy 4wd pickup driving 75-80 mph.

My best fuel avg. to date is 20.02887 mpg on 87 octane (E10) Shell gas in combined city/highway driving.

2,085.2 total miles
374.6 trip meter
18.703 gallons serviced
20.02887 mpg
20.1 avg comp reading

I drive 5 miles in stop and go traffic and 16 miles on a two lane at 60 mph with some small hills every day, to and from work and to church every other Sunday, about 20 miles highway and 4-5 miles in city traffic.

I filled up with Shell this morning and received 19.0959 mpg, the avg comp read 19.1 mpg. I received 16.756 mpg on the first tank of gas that I purchased.

I have always received my best mpg from Conoco 87 octane. I run Conoco when I visit family in TX or IN. I averaged 21.1 mpg this past Christmas in my '07.5 - 4.6L 2V(248 hp), SCab STX, 3.55 gears. I had a full bed of firewood, a SuperChips Tuner (87 Tune), a 3" Magnaflow CatBack, an AVS Hood Deflector, factory size tires set at 37 psic and the Cruise set at 70 mph.

I expect 22 mpg on Conoco gas in my '11 5.0L.

Enjoy the weekend.

Im getting 16 right now but thats because im driving it a little harder than usual and the winterblend gas is still here combined with it still being 37 degrees in Buffalo. If I baby it a little more I can easily get 17.5 and know its going to get better in summer and once it truely breaks in.

While that is true, it's not a fore gone conclusion that we have to get horrible mpg's. How we drive them has a huge effect on the numbers that we see.

I've got the V6, and I know that I could get better than 20mpg consistantly if I had a 4X2 with 3.55's. I hardly drive my truck, mostly weekends as I drive a company E250 during the week, but there is going to be a hand full of times a year that I need 4X4. In the past I've decided to forgo that abilty for performance. At this point in my life I don't want to miss out on the things that require me to use 4X4 thoes few times. So, I don't get as good mpg's and I opted to not spend more on performance.

We are driving truck but if the gas prices get over four bucks a gallon and maybe five or even six bucks a gallon, we aren't going to have a choice but to take notice.

If we want we can improve our mpg's. It's not much fun, but it is possible.

Im not complaining by any means. Yes I said I was a tad dissappointed but I guess I should blame myself for driving the way I do. Sorry if im not hauling feathers somewhere but I usually like to get where im going as soon as I can. Im the kind of person that gets almost physically sick if im late and traffic sometimes messes up my timing. Ah well...at least we all have one thing in common....great trucks!!!

No bullcrap flag. I have the 5.0 4x4 with 3.73's. super crew. I hook a 650 trip a couple weeks ago and I averaged 20.2. It was 95% highway. I had my cruise set on 70. These trucks can and do get good mileage on highway. However, each truck varies I'm sure.

Yup!! I have no issues getting 20-22 mpg highway speeds hand calculated. 3 major differences from me to you.
1. 4x2
2. 3.55s
3. 70 mph.
That all combined makes a big difference.
