Question New Gears for my truck?

I have a marriage coming up and one of our plans is to buy a travel trailer. My truck currently has the 3.31 gears in it. I'm looking at upgrading to 3.55 or 3.73 gears to better haul with. I currently have a stock crew 4.6 with 17" tires, and no idea on the trailer size yet.

I know 3.55 would be OK but maybe not worth it since it's a small jump in ratio, but 3.73 may be too much since I drive in town a lot.

How much would a regear+programming cost and what ratio do you think I should go with?

Even if you regear, you can't increase the various load limits. Buy your trailer with this in mind.

if you drive in town alot 3.73's will be better.

if you drive highway more, 3.55 will be better. BUT, 3.73's will give you a tad more power while towing. if it was me i'd go with a 3.73 or 4.10 gear ratio depending on trailer size and tire size you have/will have in the future.

Id at least go with a 3:73 gear. With these 6 speed trannies running a 3:73 rear end is still on the conservative side. Do you plan on adding bigger tires in the future, if so you may want to consider a 4:10.

4.10 for towing and in town. I'm not sure you need it, though. The 6-spd makes a huge difference compared to the old 4-spds. Buy the TT, try it a few trips. That's a $1500 investment for 4WD trucks.

How heavy is the trailer and how often do you expect to tow it?

Like I said in the original post, I don't have one picked out yet, and I'll tow it a few times a year.

And it's 2wd so I'll only need one axle done.

So what's the cost to do this to one axle? 2wd.

With the steep 1st gear in the 6 speed you may not need to regear. If you do regear, the rule of thumb is go up at least 2 to make it noticeable - which for you would be 3.73.
