My SYNC went deaf
My SYNC went deaf
I've had my 2011 XLT for a month and SYNC has stopped working. It doesn't respond to any voice commands. It isn't that it misunderstands, it just doesn't even hear me. Also, bluetooth is on, but it won't connect to my iPhone. So basically nothing works.
I checked the SYNC forum and it appears to be a problem that other people have had too. The only fix I read about was to unplug/plug the fuse like a reboot. I haven't tried it yet, but even if it works it isn't acceptable.
Any one else have problems?

My Sync system locks up when I leave a usb drive plugged in. If I pull the USB drive out and plug it back in, I can get my phone to connect and the USB drive to play my songs.
I brought my truck into the dealer this afternoon and they do not have a firmware patch to fix this issue. The dealer told me they will report it to Ford.
My Sync hasn't died, but it certainly isn't working as it should be.

Yeah, the 2011 F150s have Gen1-V3.2 SYNC software and it simply has numerous problems with USB devices, in my experience with Kingston and Hitachi USB devices.
I pulled the SYNC fuse (#2 in the kick panel on the passenger side) earlier today because SYNC had totally died when I left the Hitachi USB hard drive attached. SYNC came back to life, but did not then detect the hard drive, so either the drive is now dead, or SYNC is braindead.
I think a software update should be coming out soon, but I kinda doubt it would address the USB problems, but maybe....

I also really hate that Microsoft didn't design a CTRL-ALT-DEL button (intead of pulling the fuse which is NOT fun).
For whatever reason (maintain index memory?) the SYNC system does not "go down" when you shut off the truck. So it seems to always remain active, and simply needs to be rebooted.
Ford should have gone with Apple instead of Microsoft.
I'll shut up now, but I drove 200 miles yesterday without my SYNC USB working, and another 200 miles today without my SYNC USB working.....

I wonder if the USB drive issue is also present on the earlier model trucks with Sync ('09 and '10 models). I am currently using an 8 gig Toshiba USB drive. Hopefully this issue can be resolved with firmware instead of a new hardware design. I shouldn't have to pull a fuse or keep removing and inserting the USB drive. Hopefully a lot of dealers are getting this compliant and Ford is getting word of this.

i have the same problems on my 2011. If i always unplug my flashdrive before i cut the truck off it always works when i plug it back in, but if i just leave it in it just freezes.

We are not alone...I just went to www.syncmyride.com and checked out the forums. A lot of people are complaining about this. One guy is speculating that the USB drives are drawing to much current out of the APIM unit on startup. If this is true, firmware will probably not fix the problem.

High-Ster,
Do you leave your USB drive plugged in overnight? If so, does it get recognized by your Sync the next day? What memory size is your BB Storm?
Thanks
My Storm was bought 2 1/2 years ago, (Storm 1) and has always streamed bluetooth, phone book downloaded without problem and connects as soon as I start the truck.
My voice commands are always recognized and the whole system really impresses my pals.
I did have problems with the initial pairing of the phone, but it was quickly remedied by the people at Verizon.
My mike is located in the rearview mirror and I just speak in a normal voice when giving commands.
In my crib, I'm at least 100 feet away from 'Chester the Molester' and sometimes when using my remote start, my phone pairs with Sync from inside my house.
The signal is going thru 2, 6" walls, my house entry door, and the garage door.
I've never upgraded any software and have never messed with 'Syncmyride'.
My '10 XLT is the very first vehicle I've owned that has never had to go back to the dealer for any warranty claims, so far.

The only reason I speculate (hope!) that this is a software rather than hardware problem is because I doubt that the SYNC hardware has undergone revision for the 2011 models, though I could definitely be wrong. :|
Kingston is probably the top recommended manufacturer for flash/thumb drives, and it is outrageous (to be kind) that SYNC has a problem with Kingston, even if the USB is (potentially) drawing more power than expected (which is just speculation by the SYNC designers at this point).
The SYNC designers say that there should be NO PROBLEM keeping a USB device continuously connected, however, there is a problem doing this. But I've also tried NOT keeping the USB connected, and unplugging it, and SYNC still develops a problem.
I'd rather not have my dealer replace the SYNC APIM at this point until after a new software update is released (hopefully soon). If the problem goes away, then great.
Thankfully Ford did not roll-out the SYNC "MyTouch" with the 2011 F150 since that is having A LOT of problems.
I would gladly downgrade to an older version of SYNC software if they'd only make it available on the "syncMyRide" website.

Don't know if this makes any difference, but the files on my 5 gig flash drives (Seagate?) are FAT files, not WMP's.
The drives were on sale at Wally World for $8.00us, so my son picked some up for me cuz he works there. He gets an additional 10% off.
I haven't removed mine from the port for a couple of months cuz I just sprung for some new music (The Rippingtons, Maroon 5).
