Back Up Camera Mod

Got a back up camera to install so I need some help. 2010 FX4 Super Crew.

If your truck came stock with a backup camera, or you have done this mod please answer these for me.

1. Where is the camera mounted?

2. How/where is the wire routed?

3. Which wire in the harness is the reverse sensing wire?

Thanks for the help.

the camera is in the ford emblem on the tailgate.

can't answer the other questions.

I wish it was on the bumper or licence plate holder, when the tailgate is down, the camera is useless.

I'm getting ready to add the backup camera to my FX4 as well, so I've researched alot on the web.

Do you have the factory Sony Nav system already? If not, you probably do not have any of the factory wiring already installed for the camera. If you do, there is a good chance that you already have the wiring from the inside of the truck to the back, and will only need the wiring harness that hooks in to the camera and the brake lights.

Also, if you are looking to add the OEM camera to an OEM system, the tricky part is getting the camera activated. There are only two ways that I know of to activate an OEM camera on a truck that did not come with it from the factory.

1. You have to find a dealer that is willing to look up a truck with the same options as yours, plus camera, in the Oasis system, and upload the firmware from that truck in to yours. There's no option to just "turn on" the camera in the firmware that your truck already has.

2. Install a Lockpick device on your system which will allow you to activate the camera, as well as unlock several features on your DVD player, gps, and camera setup. This is the option that I am going with. If you do a search for "Ford Lockpick" you will find the site with alot of information on how you install it and how it works. It's pricey, but I think worth it considering the hassle that you will have to go through trying to get a dealer to activate the camera for you.

If you are looking to install the camera to an aftermarket monitor, then my guess is that you would have to run all of the wiring from the camera to the cab. If you do a Google search on "F150 emblem camera" you will find several forums that give instructions on how to do something aftermarket.

Hope this helps.

I have received mixed responses to the answer of that very question. If you have the Sony Nav system but no back up camera, is the wiring harness already run from front to back.

Some say yes the harness is there, some say no it is not.

Does anyone know for sure or is there and easy way to tell if it is there or not? I would like to add the back up camera, but not really wanting to have have to deal with running a new wire harness from front to back.

Here is a link to another forum that has pics of where to look to find out if you have the wiring harness already installed.

I'm installing a new deck...the AVIC-Z120BT with the pionner backup camera.....since ist's all aftermarket, the hook ups are pretty simple...just need to find where to mount the camera, and the best way to route the wire.....I'm sure I'm not the first person to do this and was hoping that someone would share there install experence and lessons learned with me...Was thinking of installing the camera, above the hitch but below the bumper...right in the center....this way when the tailgate is down, I can still use it. Routing the wire seems to be the biggest issue. So any help would be great.

10fx4blue, I had the Sony Nav radio, but no back up camera. I ordered it that way. I installed the camera myself, and did the wiring myself. I was going to use a lockpick for the camera activation, but they did not have it ready to ship. So, I had the dealer activate it. My truck did not have the wiring run to the back for the camera. I ordered a tail light wiring harness that had the camera wiring in it. I used the back up lights as my power for the camera. I found a wiring diagram for the nav radio and soldered wires into there, behind the radio, for the camera. I ran cable tv coax, because it is shielded, as my camera + & - feed from the screen to the wiring harness in the rear. It took me about 20 minutes to hook the wires into the Nav radio and about another hour to run the coax along the wiring harness that runs to the front of the truck to the back. I just wire tied it to the existing harness, but I did wrap it in the plastic wire loom stuff also. Drop me a line if you need any more help.
